Wembley is all about moments. Wembley is for winners. You won’t remember how the 90 minutes went. You’ll remember Collin saving 2 penalties. You’ll remember Gus scoring the winner. You’ll remember academy graduate Jack Bridge putting it all on his shoulders to take the first penalty. It doesn’t matter how you win. But you win 🏆 🦐

It seems increasingly apparent this squad is going to see significant change over the summer, which makes getting the recruitment structure in place quickly absolutely vital. The club cannot afford to stand still while others around them get moving. This is another key piece of the jigsaw for OG and the new football department. On paper, JD arrives with an impressive CV.

Southend United’s contract situation this summer really highlights the scale of the job now facing the club hierarchy. A large chunk of the current squad are out of contract following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, including senior names such as Gus Scott-Morriss, Nathan Ralph, Jack Bridge, James Morton, Tom Hopper, Harry Taylor and Josh Walker. Harry Boyes, Ben Goodliffe, Leon Chambers-Parillon, Sam Austin and Slavi Spasov remain under contract until 2027 but the reality is this summer presents Southend with something they arguably haven’t had for a long time… a clean slate. The loan situation also plays a major role. James Golding, Noah Mawene and Alfie Massey are all due to return to their parent clubs. Meanwhile, both Harry Cardwell and Andrew Dallas have already been released by Forest Green and Barnsley respectively, meaning both situations are now firmly in Southend’s hands. It is widely expected Cardwell will become a permanent Southend player again this summer, while the door also appears open for a potential move for Dallas should the club decide to pursue it. It’s also expected the club will trigger the option on Charley Kendall to extend his stay beyond this summer. Supporters may not want to hear the word “rebuild” after a season that ended at Wembley, but that’s exactly what this is shaping up to be. The positive for Southend is that it arrives at a time where the club finally feels like it has proper structure behind the scenes, a Director of Football in place, flexibility within the budget and an opportunity to build a squad that fully fits the next era of the football club. Current squad situation: GK Out of contract: Collin Andeng-Ndi Under contract: None DEF Out of contract: Gus Scott-Morriss, George Wind, Nathan Ralph, Harry Taylor, Joe Gubbins Under contract: Harry Boyes, Ben Goodliffe End of loan: James Golding MID Out of contract: Cav Miley, Noor Husin, James Morton, Jack Bridge, Oli Coker, Keenan Appiah-Forson Under contract: Leon Chambers-Parillon, Sam Austin End of loan: Noah Mawene, Alfie Massey FWD Out of contract: Tom Hopper, Josh Walker, Charley Kendall Under contract: Slavi Spasov Released by parent club: Harry Cardwell, Andrew Dallas

Understand the concern around the vacant Head Coach position and the number of players currently out of contract. But this is precisely why Oliver Gage was brought into the Club. There is a clear need to appoint a Head Coach sooner rather than later, but the key thing now is making the right appointment, not the quickest one. Gage will also be leading the contract negotiations and wider football operations side of things this summer. This is the structure the club has chosen to move towards, and moments like this are exactly when that structure is supposed to come into its own. #Shrimpers 🦐
