How many times have you heard the following phrases? •No pain, no gain •Never stop grinding •Give it 110% These mantras have led to two things: A mass culture of burnout, especially among high achievers People working harder and harder but getting worse results Neither outcome is optimal. In my recent HBR article, I propose a solution: the 85% rule. The 85% rule states to reach maximum output, you need to refrain from giving maximum effort. Think of a car that is continuously redlined — you may start fast, but mechanical trouble is sure to follow. Even if it’s counterintuitive, past a certain point, more effort doesn't increase our results; it sabotages them. Here are two things I’m committing to do for the rest of this year: Working below my capacity. I’m setting an upper bound at 85% to help me achieve optimal results For example, I’ll never write more than 1,000 words per day. Creating a "done for the day" time. I’m establishing a time when my work is done, and sticking to it. Have you ever intentionally given less effort? How did it work for you?
