@SFMattISU Not at all. Facilities like that are massive. They don’t run on one AC unit. It’s an old facility, updating it is not easy. Especially for a program that runs in the red.

BREAKING: The Iowa State Cyclones gymnastics season was suspended after concerns were raised about the training facilities. Per Senior Associate Athletic Director Shamaree Brown: “At this time, the gymnastics facilities remain closed as a result of concerns that were raised, which ultimately led to the suspension of the season.” The internal records differ with the official narrative, which first cited an inability to safely field enough gymnasts, then pivoted to “unreconcilable differences” between coaches, gymnasts, and parents. It’s been further documented elsewhere that the gymnastics training facilities lacked usual safety features. The foam pits were shallower than standard foam pits, and the bottom is made of concrete, not the usual trampolines which are standard for athlete safety. Among other issues is a lack of air conditioning, which causes unsafe environments during summer training due to heat itself but also due to an increased risk of slippage from sweating surfaces. The facilities are also known to be inconsistent with heating during the winter, with instances of gymnasts wearing parkas to stay warm while heat was out in Beyer Hall. When former coach KJ Kindler left the program following the 2006 season, she raised concerns about the quality of the facilities. The issue is not new. It has sat unaddressed for at least 2 decades, dating back to before Jamie Pollard was the athletic director. While it’s feasibly plausible that injuries or irreconcilable differences could have occurred, facilities neglect would be the root cause that links the two together. Ultimately, facilities maintenance is the responsibility of the athletic department. Also worth noting is that the Iowa State swimming and diving team resides in the same building as gymnastics. The Administration also cited prior investigations into the program in 2018 and 2023. A public records request attempting to acquire details of those investigations by USA Today was denied, and the results of those investigations remain a mystery.

With Senate Dems voting for the DHS funding deal and House Dems prepared to vote for it today until it was killed by House Republicans, there is no longer even the slightest debate about who owns this shutdown. Republicans are blocking funding. They own it 1,000%.
