A piece of a SpaceX rocket is set to crash into the Moon.
The object is the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket, launched on January 15, 2025, to deliver a lunar lander. After completing its primary mission, the stage was not brought back to Earth and instead entered an uncontrolled orbit through space.
That journey is now coming to an end.
According to tracking data from Project Pluto, the rocket stage will slam into the Moon on August 5, 2026, at approximately 5,400 miles per hour (8,700 km/h) — about seven times the speed of sound. The impact is expected on the near side of the Moon, close to Einstein crater.
There is no risk to Earth, and the collision will be relatively modest. It won’t be visible to the naked eye from here. Still, scientists are watching closely.
When the stage strikes the surface, it will excavate a new crater and eject material from beneath the lunar regolith. The resulting debris plume could offer researchers a rare glimpse into the Moon’s subsurface composition, turning an unintended crash into an unexpected scientific opportunity.
