If we evaluate Catholicism strictly based on the Bible, many Protestants argue that several Catholic doctrines are not biblical or even contradict Scripture. Here are a few key areas where they claim Catholic teachings go against the Bible:
1. Authority of the Pope
•Catholic Teaching: The Pope is the head of the Church, the successor of Peter, and has supreme authority.
•Biblical Issue: Nowhere in the Bible does it say Peter was the supreme leader over other apostles. Jesus is the head of the Church (Colossians 1:18). Also, Peter himself called Jesus the “chief cornerstone” (1 Peter 2:6-7), not himself.
2. Salvation by Faith Plus Works
•Catholic Teaching: Salvation involves both faith and works (baptism, sacraments, confession, etc.).
•Bible Says: Salvation is by faith alone.
•Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
•Romans 3:28: “For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.”
3. Praying to Mary and Saints
•Catholic Teaching: Catholics pray to Mary and saints for intercession.
•Bible Says: Jesus is the only mediator.
•1 Timothy 2:5: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”
•No verse supports praying to saints. In fact, the Bible condemns communicating with the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
4. Purgatory
•Catholic Teaching: A temporary place of purification before heaven.
•Bible Says: No mention of purgatory. After death, souls go to either heaven or hell.
•Hebrews 9:27: “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”
•Luke 23:43: Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise,” with no mention of purgatory.
5. Transubstantiation (Eucharist Becomes Jesus’ Literal Body and Blood)
•Catholic Teaching: The bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ.
•Bible Says: Communion is symbolic.
•Luke 22:19: “Do this in remembrance of me.”
•Jesus also said, “I am the door” (John 10:9) and “I am the vine” (John 15:5), which were symbolic statements.
6. Calling Priests ‘Father’
•Catholic Teaching: Priests are addressed as “Father.”
•Bible Says:
•Matthew 23:9: “Do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.”
7. Veneration of Mary
•Catholic Teaching: Mary is sinless, the Queen of Heaven, and co-redeemer.
•Bible Says: Mary was blessed, but she was still a sinner in need of a Savior.
•Luke 1:47: Mary herself said, “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
•The Bible never calls her the “Queen of Heaven” (the only time this title appears is in Jeremiah 7:18, referring to a pagan goddess).
Conclusion
The Bible emphasizes faith in Christ alone, not religious traditions. Many Catholic practices are rooted in traditions developed over centuries rather than biblical commands. This is why many Protestants reject Catholicism as true Christianity.
