A 7,000-mile long marine heat wave in the Pacific and another in the Atlantic will shape summer weather patterns across the United States. Warmth and moisture from these features will most prominently affect the West and South 🧵

What happened to being the most transparent administration in history? Donald Trump is using our government to silence witnesses, steal billions, and jail his opponents.

On April 3, I walked through the halls of the National Art Museum in Kyiv. On May 24, I cried looking at its wounds after the russian attack. My favourite painting from that April day: 🇺🇦 Anatolii Lymariev Fallen Angel, 1983–1985

@strategywoman Smart idea. Hopefully it's mission to preserve the images isn't needed, but rather becomes a way for all of us around the world to see & appreciate your heritage. Maybe it'll boost tourism in the long run.

Ukraine is also fighting for its memory. Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s oldest religious and cultural sites, has received a mobile 3D digitisation unit for preserving icons, books, and other treasures during the war. It was provided by a Czech-Ukrainian initiative.

The panel Hiroshima-Chornobyl by Liudmyla Mieshkova was created in 1996. In 2005, it was meant to become a gift to Hiroshima on behalf of the Ukrainian state. But no officials arrived to collect the artwork from the artist’s workshop. To this day, it has never been exhibited.

My last stop for today. Chornobyl Museum. By destroying museums and galleries, russians try to destroy our culture and memory. We will rebuild.

Some random thoughts on the new era: As AI steadily creeps into our work in the fields of meteorology and programming, there is an inevitable uneasiness associated with "losing control" and "becoming obsolete" as human developers and scientists. It's a fear I've occasionally felt, anyway, and I know I'm not alone. I used quotes because, while these are valid feelings, I don't think they must be reality. The process of performing work is evolving as agents do more of it, but the impetus for that work is unchanged. We are the driving force of inspiration and curiosity that births our work in the first place. Taking ownership is the way to preserve autonomy and hard skills, and we're entering an era where that must be a personal, conscious choice. If you're a student, you must pursue knowledge and stay hungry, lest silicon crutches leave you with passing grades but no ability. Harness AI to enhance your learning process, but never yield your understanding to it. Only you can ensure that. If you're a programmer, AI is a dramatic accelerant - use it! It is the future of software. But insist on retaining ownership of your projects. Be a nosy manager, a steering influence on design decisions, and an intentional critic. The dopamine hit of pressing will eventually wrest authorship from you otherwise. If you're a scientist, AI is either expert-level in your field or will be someday. But science is still advanced by PIs, not AIs. Curiosity about the universe is a defining human trait - keep your curious hands on the rudder. Find the cutting edge and ride it; chances are you will advance the boundary with AI assistance far more than AI will alone. Much about this new era is intimidating, but also exciting. I say grab it all by the horns and harness these capabilities for doing good in the world and your own life. Just choose continuously to protect your own sovereignty and humanity. Life is ours to live. #NotWrittenByABot

The Holy Spirit challenges us today regarding our relationship with technology and the ongoing digital revolution. Technology has the power to heal, connect, educate and protect our common home; but it can also divide, exclude and generate new forms of injustice. #MagnificaHumanitas

Efforts to deal with the aftermath of yesterday’s Russian strikes continue in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi and Podilskyi districts. Nearly 100 State Emergency Service personnel are involved. In total, around 300 sites across Kyiv were damaged. Most of them are residential buildings – over the past day, notifications of varying degrees of damage were submitted for nearly 150 private homes and apartment blocks. As of now, 87 people are reported to have been injured in the capital, including three children. Twenty-one people have been hospitalized, while the rest are receiving outpatient care. I am grateful to the medical workers treating and supporting our people. I thank everyone involved in recovery efforts, all emergency and public services. Overall, six of our regions were affected by yesterday’s attack. Protection must be strengthened: support for air defense remains a daily priority of Ukraine’s foreign policy work at every level. And pressure on the aggressor – along with accountability for all these strikes – must be ensured. I thank the partners who condemned yesterday’s attack and everyone ready to help us with concrete steps.

Yesterday, they offered free coffee and sweets after the attack. Today, it was my turn. I bought coffee and cheesecake for them. We have to support each other. Shoulder to shoulder.

Latest numbers on where we stand with ENSO and the Atlantic shows that we are solidly in the -AMO/+ENSO corner that is almost always associated with below-average Atlantic hurricane activity. With ENSO continuing to warm in the coming weeks and the Atlantic cooling recently, the gap between the two will continue to tilt more and more in favor of the Pacific this year.

Canada strongly condemns Russia’s launch of large-scale missile and drone attacks on civilian targets in Kyiv tonight. For more than four years since Russia’s illegal invasion, it has greatly underestimated the courage, determination, and strength of the Ukrainian people — even as Putin’s regime has relentlessly bombed Ukrainian energy infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and homes. We call on Russia to immediately cease these strikes and end this illegal war of aggression. They prolong human suffering and do nothing to change the fact that Russia will lose this war. Canada will continue working closely with international partners to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine and Europe.
