I finally finished setting up my new observatory. Between the mount, the two telescopes and the camera it's pushing 200 lbs. But it's a great set up and I can't wait for the next clear night!

I lived in Vancouver during the 2011 riots. Tonight I was describing the experience to my 10 year old daughter and when she asked me what a the riot was.
I said it was a big group of people setting fire to the city.
Then she asked why they did that.

While talking with a colleague today I realized something shocking. When I started working at my this school nearly a decade ago there was about 800 fewer students. Today, with all those extra students the science department has FEWER staff.
Guess who is picking up the slack?

The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus is the oldest manuscript written in algebra and trigonometry, dating back to 3,550 years ago. It shows that the Egyptians used first-order equations, geometric series and a second-order algebraic equation, related to the Pythagorean theorem a² + b² = c² It also describes how to obtain an approximation of π accurate to within less than 1% and one of the earliest attempts at squaring the circle.

@ian_doktor But it also provides an opportunity to understand how mathematics relates to so many contexts. Finding a formula or relationship provides another, more advanced way of understanding the relationship. Don’t just give the formula, explore the data and look for a pattern.

A good article about a optic that was a focus of the latter stage of my career. For those that listened, much of my Re-writes process is summarized and validated here. To sum, few students needed to complete more than one rewrite since they learned how to study from the process.
