I am noticing a considerable shift in the narrative reaction to Iran that reminds me of the shift we saw in the months following Oct. 7 towards Israel. Starting from an outpouring of sympathy followed by confusion, then disdain, then open contempt. In both cases each of them started off from a very strong moral position, which caused people’s short and longterm memories to be overridden with empathy for them. Leaning heavily into the Nova Music Festival and the Minab School Tomahawk Attack, respectively. And in both cases, they became overconfident that the narrative will be permanently in their favor irrespective of how they chose to react due to the initial outpouring of support. Causing them to lose caution and adopt a narrative people find difficult to sympathize with, and causing them to broaden their list of targets beyond what any fair minded individual would consider legitimate self defense. For Israel, the narrative switched from self defense to the destruction of “Amalek” and operationally every building was a “Hamas Base.” For Iran, the narrative switched from self defense to destroying all their neighbors and piracy in the strait of Hormuz. Operationally, every inch of the Arab states became an “American Base.” The issue with that tone is it is fundamentally offensive to the general public’s sensibilities. When your academics are gloating about indiscriminate targeting, and your parliamentarians are gloating about the destruction of civilian infrastructure. On the informational front, this is the worst position you can find yourself in. At the drop of a hat, people grow tired of your antics and “get the ick” so to say.
