Hot take on Elon’s surprise decision to rent 30 megawatts of compute to Anthropic:
1. It’s a tacit concession that xAI is not all that close to AGI (despite what he suggested last year).
2. It’s more evidence that pure scaling doesn’t get you to AGI.
3. If xAI turns out to be just another cloud company, in an increasingly crowded market, SpaceX investors very likely overpaid.
4. The very fact that xAI *has* an enough of oversupply to sell some to a big competitors doesn’t bode well for hyperscalers. We may very quickly find ourselves in a world where supply outstrips demands and prices drop precipitously.
5. Customers win but …
6. Companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle could all take a hit, especially given what they have done to their cash flows to build up their cloud compute resources.

project hail mary was unfortunately a middling adaptation of a good book. the script has the unfortunate affect of “language model populism” - where every single line has to be some sort of punched up comedic zinger yet still unremarkable.
visuals were uninspired and trite and more or less identical to other space movies. everything good about the film comes from the wonderful world scaffolding of the book and the hard science fiction of it all that lets you suspend disbelief on the alien rocky
the movie doesn’t really try to get into the xenolinguistic stuff even at the depth the book tries (someone called it “arrival for idiots” which unfortunately hit )
the thing that elevated the book is the commitment to a hard science fiction engineeringporn fiction at a level nobody else is able to write. the direction of the movie doesn’t really convey the same feeling successfully, and you’re left with flat characters, an alien that is more human than several humans i know, and a marvel populism
gosling and the german woman are great as actors, but this movie will not be remembered in a year. it is disappointing to see people do so little with a quarter billion, insane acting talent, and incredible source IP

as an aside, anyone who may have followed me for a while on here might have a certain idea of who i might be.
but the version you see of me here is a bit like golden gate claude where you’re seeing one of my traits - mostly tinkering with ai - dialed to an 11, and then spun through an algorithmic feed.
if there is one thing i would like you to know about me, the *actual* me, it’s that i do not bend the knee for anyone or anything.
i believe in values, and i believe in being principled.
i am not perfect, but i try to abide by my values at all times - especially when it may not be convenient, as it is now.
though i am not religious, i am, privately, very spiritual. i’ll avoid the pedantic differences between the two, but i have a few beliefs about a few things…
and i very, very much look forward to the day when i get to stand before god and declare with proud certainty that i did not sell my soul.

This week, Anthropic delivered a master class in arrogance and betrayal as well as a textbook case of how not to do business with the United States Government or the Pentagon. Our position has never wavered and will never waver: the Department of War must have full, unrestricted access to Anthropic’s models for every LAWFUL purpose in defense of the Republic. Instead, @AnthropicAI and its CEO @DarioAmodei, have chosen duplicity. Cloaked in the sanctimonious rhetoric of “effective altruism,” they have attempted to strong-arm the United States military into submission - a cowardly act of corporate virtue-signaling that places Silicon Valley ideology above American lives. The Terms of Service of Anthropic’s defective altruism will never outweigh the safety, the readiness, or the lives of American troops on the battlefield. Their true objective is unmistakable: to seize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military. That is unacceptable. As President Trump stated on Truth Social, the Commander-in-Chief and the American people alone will determine the destiny of our armed forces, not unelected tech executives. Anthropic’s stance is fundamentally incompatible with American principles. Their relationship with the United States Armed Forces and the Federal Government has therefore been permanently altered. In conjunction with the President's directive for the Federal Government to cease all use of Anthropic's technology, I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk to National Security. Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic. Anthropic will continue to provide the Department of War its services for a period of no more than six months to allow for a seamless transition to a better and more patriotic service. America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech. This decision is final.
