@Rj4Truth34585 @WestsideLAGuy sounds maddeningly cliche but doing social things outside & getting into hobbies on stiff you legit enjoy that involve other people. Like football? Watch some games at bars. Like reading? Go to book talks occasionally, etc. These mixers or joining sports leagues are terrible

@xSERP3NT @nbcwashington I beleive Americans tolerate way too much disorder in our cities, and I beleive in broken windows. But gathering or hanging out is not a crime (“soft on crime”) and also living in one of densest most social parts of city and expecting it to be like silent like Potomac at night?

@nbcwashington As someone who actually lives in the navy yard, I can only fall asleep on Saturday nights once the curfew goes into effect. Non stop screaming, the occasional gunshot, sirens. If anything, make the curfew earlier. Being soft on crime is what caused this mess to escalate.

@Rybread_26 @J_adoreDiDi my unpopular take is that this idea of "soul" and "character and history" is overrated, and often with a bit of virtue signaling to it. The whole city doesn't have to look like Logan Circle and Dupont! I like that we have the Wharf waterfront, and an industrial/gritty NoMa too

I hate to say this, because it's my local Chick-fil-A and our standard order of 3x 30 nuggets is a delicious and affordable way to feed our whole family, but Chick-fil-A should probably shut this store down. Even after this horrible shooting where the store's workers were shot, our attorney general doesn't seem to be aware of why this is happening. It's not gun violence, it's a strong undercurrent of illegal behavior that goes unpunished until we create a cohort of people, mostly young ones, who don't think they'll ever be punished for a crime. Every car thief is out on bail, every bike thief has their case dismissed. I was assaulted a few years ago and the guy didn't show for his first 5 trial dates and they just kept pushing it until he finally got PTI and paid a fine - no record. You don't solve this with stricter gun laws. You solve it by minimum sentencing guidelines that are actually enforced and bringing back cash bail. My observation is that things are not moving in the right direction.
Attorney General Jennifer Davenport@NewJerseyOAG

I am horrified by the shooting last night in Union Township. Local law enforcement, led by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, is investigating the shooting. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. Gun violence has no place in our state, period.

@Itsjoeco @donreed1515 folks will condenscend that "cant arrest our way out of this", but thing is *certainty* of punishment is more of deterrent than the severity. Dont need to give shoplifters 10 years in max security, but if it's a kid's 3rd time something tangible must happen (key is the "must").

@StopthatMessi_ @Gritzyy_Beatz @Easternquarters @TheFergusonWay It’s April and Arsenal are ahead six points. They have City at home and can easily win it draw that game. Also points on the board > “games in hand”. I’m mystified why the discourse is as if Arsenal have already lost the league. They are clearly still favorites!

The most damaging aspect of Arsenal’s result yesterday is that they have shifted control of the title race back into City’s hands. Prior to the defeat vs Bournemouth, Arsenal still retained the mathematical advantage i.e even if City won every game, Arsenal would still have finished top. Because of yesterday’s result, the title is now effectively decided by City’s run-in. If they win all of their remaining matches, including the game against Arsenal at the Etihad, they will be champions. Arsenal have turned it from impossible into possible. And at this level, sometimes that’s all it takes.

@peter_krasucki @jakubwiech This (if true), is not the norm. Most US companies give 20 days paid and you have to work for a prolonged period with the company to get to 20 days. Maternity pay is on average 6-8 weeks total often going to 10 weeks if unpaid. Your situation isn’t the same for everyone (if true)

Impressive, very nice. Now tell me, Tom: 🇪🇺How many days of paid vacation do people in Mississippi get? Because in Europe, 20 working days is the standard. 🇪🇺How long of a paid maternity leave can a woman giving birth in Mississippi expect? Because in Europe, you can get more than a year of paid maternity leave. 🇪🇺Are free university studies available in Mississippi? Because in Europe, that’s basically the norm. 🇪🇺What does public transportation look like in Mississippi? Because in Europe, trains, buses, and trams are widespread, and in some places, even free. 🇪🇺What is the life expectancy at birth in Mississippi? Because in Europe it’s nearly 82 years. I could go on, because we haven’t even touched on gun violence, income inequality, or food quality. But what I’m really trying to say is this: GDP doesn’t tell you much about quality of life. It’s a measure of production, not wellbeing. If GDP doesn’t translate into a real improvement in the lives of the majority of society, it becomes an empty statistic. And boasting about it starts to resemble a boy at school bragging about how much his father earns, while conveniently leaving out that he never has time for him. In the end, money simply obscures what actually matters most in life.
Tom Harwood@tomhfh

Europoor is an entirely accurate phrase. America is simply in a different league.

@peter_krasucki @PHartman85 @jakubwiech Those leave figures are way off for typical American companies. Dishonest to pass them off as typical (even if you personally get that, can’t call an outlier is representative). 30 days AL *and* additional 30 days sick? 20 days COMBINED pto plus holidays mouth more typical

@passionforana @hydiera @itstifftiara DC is north of Kansas City, Cincinnati, St. Louis and Sacramento. IMO *culturally* the south starts in VA after the NoVa/DMV counties. Like Fairfax and Arlington are not like Richmond or tidewater. But culturally saying DC is closer to ATL/Memphis than Baltimore/Philly is crazy

@spottedreptile @FitAndFortune subtle shift is to shift from “weekends” ffriday to Sunday is like half the week!) to either 24 hrs (Friday night to Saturday night) or like think instances—so two freebie meals or outings. I don’t think one has to be so militant that they can’t even enjoy food or socializing tho

@circlecrules @AustinJustice @PeterMoskos @scottwww7 …This is also why paying attention to stuff like street lighting and fare hopping and expired tags matters; as does zero tolerance for the most violent criminal elements. It can be done without being a police state and it can be in conjunction with prevention/rehab

San Francisco is now a model for how to fight crime. A few years ago it averaged 86 car break-ins per day. Today: 15. SF did two things: 1. Got a DA that prosecutes criminals: Following the successful recall of Chesa Boudin, DA Brooke Jenkins started prosecuting prolific offenders and said so loudly. Crime dropped every year since she took office. 2. Put tech to use: In 2024, SF activated 400 license plate readers and deployed 80 drones citywide. This tech feeds officers live intelligence on suspects in motion. Drones alone have assisted in 1,000+ arrests since then. The technology lets authorities solve crimes as they happen rather than depend on much more intensive, legally perilous post hoc investigations (which ironically are often more intrusive than using tech). The results: - Car break-ins down 85% - Robbery down 30% - Burglary down 33%. - Homicides hit their lowest level since 1954. Plate readers, drones, a prosecutor who prosecutes. That's the whole formula! Austin has the opposite approach. License plate cameras are effectively banned. Jail bookings are down despite repeat offenders victimizing innocent people regularly. Bond violations went from 37 in 2020 to 250 last year. SF proved crime is a choice. Austin, so far, keeps making a different one.

@SafeSidewalksDC @MandyKnowsDC …for a US city DC still has many walkeable neighborhoods and the city is relative well connected. It’s *relatively* walkeable and connected by public transit in a way only 4-5 other US cities beyond NYC are. We are not Houston, Phoenix or ATL

@SafeSidewalksDC @MandyKnowsDC I get what @mandyknowsDC meant, but her sections were too conservative in the other direction. Foggy Bottom and Georgetown are walkeable. Southwest—old SW AND wharf—are. Brentwood is. Is DC 100% walkeable? No. But no US city other than NYC is walkeable everywhere for almost all..
