Trev Clark's Obscure Aviation History 🚁
Several of my mates spent 'time' at RAF Coltishall, even before it was the prison it is today! Arguably, the 'spiritual home' of the RAF SEPECAT Jaguar fleet, I still find it hard to remember that it closed two decades ago.

Who can identify what car this engine was used in? And look at that weird drive belt routing.

Air Safety #OTD by Francisco Cunha
Braking chutes in jetliners The first series of the SE 210 Caravelle (as seen in this Swissair bird) used a parachute mounted in the tail that helped slow the aircraft after landing. Before leaving the runway for the taxiway, the pilots would release the parachute onto the runway, where ground crews would collect and repack it. On arrival at the parking stand, a fresh parachute — already folded and prepared — would be installed on the aircraft, ready for the next flight. The whole procedure was quite labour-intensive and would be impossible today because of the bigger volume in traffic, but back then it was more common - other jets, such as the Tu-104, had similar devices. Later model Caravelles had thrust reversers, which greatly improved braking performance, and they got rid of the parachute afterwards.

I mean, sure — the KC-10, derived from the DC-10, can haul standard palletized cargo really well. In fact, it can carry more weight and more pallets than a C-17. But it can’t airdrop, and it’s not a true military airlifter. So why use these specialized air-refueling aircraft in that role instead of preserving them for the mission they were actually built for?

Imagine your boss decides to buy a Ferrari purely for some company track time… Then a few years later the boss wants to use it for pizza deliveries. It turns out the car is too specialized, stupidly expensive to run, terrible at the actual job. Now imagine you have a company that owns a bunch of KC-10 specialized air refueling aircraft. And the company decides to use them to haul cargo instead of saving them for air refueling. What would you call that decision? @IfindRetards
