@mil000 Second day update: running Fedora with an external RTX5090 no problem, considering connecting it to the cluster. On 3Gb out of 8 reserved by the system, no swap so far. 3S is rocking!

Fun fact ! The MX Master 3S has 8gb of RAM, this is an upgrade from the 3, which only had 4gb of RAM.

No please, no! Don't push people to think that a cluster of 4 M5 Max is a viable solution. If you set the to High Power they will drain battery after few hours even if connected. Moreover It will generate an incredible amount of heat and noise. For me is a no go, sorry.

@ivanfioravanti It only drains that amount of power in short bursts; after a few seconds, it throttles down to the normal 120~ of sustained load, and it’s only (now) M5 max with 128GB you can buy.

@ivanfioravanti @TheAhmadOsman Well, not quite, I disagree. 1. Due to the mem. shortage, it’s the only Mac with 128GB you can actually buy, esp. with the M5Max. 2. The MacBook Pro with the same chip consumes less power than its Mac Studio counterpart due to the chassis’s limitations and throttling protection.

@TheAhmadOsman I agree 100%, a cluster of 4 M5 Max is a terrible idea from all point of views, starting from power consumption, heat and value for the money. This is bad.

@fruitharvester @chrisfelcker @VadimYuryev It was on and off for quite a while They implemented it before 2022,then tried to enforce it again, and it became a standard rule starting in January 2022.Since then,it has been inconsistent, but the main rule was using the school government EDU account through UNiDAYS in the US.
