He explains how India has a unique opportunity to avoid the fragmented legacy systems seen in many developed markets by embracing interoperability through ABDM and building healthcare around connected data from the outset. Watson also highlights that AI can only deliver meaningful outcomes when it is backed by high-quality, interoperable data, while the convergence of AI, IoT, cloud, and Operational Technology will enable predictive insights, smarter clinical decisions, improved patient outcomes, and more resilient hospital operations. The conversation also explores how cloud-native platforms, AI-driven diagnostics, connected medical devices, and remote monitoring can make advanced healthcare more accessible and affordable, while outlining the infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data governance needed to move from digitization to truly intelligent healthcare. But digitisation alone isn't enough if healthcare systems cannot communicate with each other. Despite the creation of 𝟵𝟬+ 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗕𝗛𝗔 𝗜𝗗𝘀 and the rapid expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), patient records often remain trapped within individual hospitals and healthcare providers. This leads to fragmented care, repeated diagnostic tests, delayed treatment, and higher healthcare costs. In this deep dive, we explore why healthcare interoperability has become the next critical milestone for India's digital health ecosystem. From legacy Hospital Information Systems and uneven adoption of global standards like 𝗛𝗟𝟳 𝗙𝗛𝗜𝗥 and 𝗦𝗡𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗗 𝗖𝗧 to workforce readiness, cybersecurity, and implementation costs, we examine the key challenges slowing progress and the strategic priorities needed to build a truly connected, patient-centric healthcare ecosystem. The article also highlights how initiatives such as 𝗔𝗕𝗗𝗠, 𝗲𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗷𝗲𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗶, 𝗖𝗼𝗪𝗜𝗡, and leading hospital networks are demonstrating the real-world impact of interoperable healthcare, while outlining the roadmap for scaling secure, standards-based health information exchange across India. Over the past two years, India's healthcare sector has witnessed an explosion of AI pilots- from diagnostics and clinical documentation to operational automation and patient engagement. Yet, for most hospitals, AI remains trapped in the pilot phase. The 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, based on insights from 𝟰𝟬𝟬+ 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮, and pharma, reveals a clear execution gap: • Only 𝟯𝟬% of AI pilots successfully transition into production. • 𝟱𝟴.𝟵𝟳% of hospitals remain caught in repeated pilot cycles. • Just 𝟭𝟲.𝟲𝟳% have scaled AI across their organizations. The findings challenge one of the biggest assumptions around healthcare AI. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.
