@eggstyrone_ Eh, he was big into ecumenism with the Assisi prayer meetings. There were popesplainers way back then, and you can find them explaining that he was marking the import of the gift by kissing it. You can find anything you want, if it makes you feel better.

@DHiddenness Is there an actual explanation people give for why he did this? I love JPII so I usually just pretend this picture doesn’t exist

This is just as bad. Shoot...*maybe* you could say that it was *unclear* what Pachamama represented. Can't say that about the Koran.

@DHiddenness @ClassicalTheis Oh DH, don't you know? The magical charism of the papacy means that everything he did in the past is retroactively sanitised. He not only CAN do no wrong; he can never have done any wrong.

The attempt on part of Trad (tm) snake oil salesmen to manufacture scandals about Pope Leo to make him appear as the reincarnation of Pope Francis is proving unsuccessful and is unlikely to have lasting influence in shaping perception. My prayer is that this will cost them financially and bring about a healthier climate for Catholic discourse

Nobody talks about it, but how did GenX get like this? Why are we like this? "The fear that everything we knew could be destroyed by the very adults who were supposed to protect us inspired both a mistrust of authority and an increasingly consumer-oriented leisure culture."

Sometimes being an American Catholic under the USCCB feels like being a ten-year-old kid with an alcoholic father who loves you, but has a tendency to beat you in a drunken rage

Cardinal Cupich turns 77 today. The Chicago shepherd is the oldest active diocesan archbishop in the US. A happy birthday to his eminence.

This is why America is probably a lot more foreign and strange than I think. Why do you think something as normal as a mud room is "weird"? Do you people not take off your coats and muddy shoes before you track it all over the house? youtu.be/Cf4MgJij-Xo?si…

One reason the clerical abuse scandals happened is that ideologically sympathetic journalists kept their mouths shut. Conservatives were silent about Maciel; more recently liberals looked the other way when Francis was protecting his abuser allies.
David Gibson@GibsonWrites

Head of the conservative Catholic League writes letter to Pope saying Leo was fooled by author of book on Opus Dei abuses and should not have met him. If you want to know why the clergy abuse scandal happened it's thanks to the cover-up reflex--by lay people not just clerics:

@ObstinateDeacon I once read Chrysostom and woke up on the side of a road, hungry, wearing a borrowed tunic and thinking I owed everybody money.
