While many want to view Trump’s recent TACO as a sign of a potential end to the Iran War, the reality is more grim. All indications point to the United States still being focused on economic warfare. The blockade, sanctions, economic strangulation… But what does the DATA show? From the perspective of the Trump Administration, this is undoubtedly the “lowest risk” option. The problem is… there’s very little indication that it is actually paying off in any appreciable way. With the recent reporting indicating that Washington may be examining a potential land blockade, to whatever degree that may exists, Trump is implicitly admitting that the sea blockade was not going to accomplish its objectives. Why escalate if you don’t have a need to escalate? There are a few key data points that are worth highlighting when discussing the effectiveness of economic warfare in the U.S./Iran War. The first is the inflation rate inside of Iran. While many are claiming they’re experiencing “hyperinflation”, that is simply not true. From a textbook perspective, that would mean monthly inflation of ~50%. While Iran’s inflation rate is certainly atrocious, at approximately 87.9% year over year, the month over month HALVED in July… from 7.2% in June, to 3.6% this past month. That’s… not a great sign that Iran’s economic collapse is “right around the corner”. The other common metric looks at the exchange rate of the Rial compared to the Dollar. The problem here is very similar. While it most certainly is TERRIBLE, at ~1.93M to $1USD, it started this war at ~1.75M to $1USD. More importantly, however, during the first blockade, the Rial rose to ~1.89M. After the MOU was announced though? It strengthened IMMENSELY to ~1.53M… Yup, you heard that right. Once there was indication that the war may be ending, the Rial rose to a STRONGER rate than before the war started… despite the blockade being in place for more than two months at that point. On top of this, many of the supporters of the blockade loved to highlight how Iran’s ability to export oil essentially halted completely. And while that’s true… Oops, I guess we forgot that Iran had ~140M barrels of oil outside the U.S. blockade line at the time it was imposed. This allowed Iran to sell at EXTREMELY elevated prices, and (as I highlighted in my analyses in The Washington Post, ABC, and Newsweek), Iran was able to earn MORE money in May, despite the blockade, than they did in January before the war even started. Even worse, Iran is SIGNIFICANTLY ahead of its oil revenue projections that they put forth in their Year 1405 Budget Bill… by several billion dollars. In fact, they’re approximately two months ahead of schedule on their oil revenues. Want to take it up a notch? During the 27 days the United States lifted the blockade under the MOU, Iran was able to export more than 80M barrels of oil that was previously trapped inside the U.S. blockade line. As a result, they will be able to earn a full THREE MONTHS of budgeted oil revenues just due to those 27 days. Inflation rate? Not meaningfully impacted. Rial? Set to be STRONGER after the war. Oil Revenues? Raking it in hand over fist. The blockade failed. The economic warfare failed. The sanctions failed. The WAR failed.
