From a therapeutic recreation center in Southeast DC to a landmark academic building in Alexandria, SK&A is honored to have contributed to two projects recognized in @AIANOVA 2026 Design Awards. Joy Evans Therapeutic Recreation Center received an Award of Merit in Civic/Cultural Architecture. Designed by @DLRGroup for the @DCDGS, with Smoot Construction Company as general contractor, the project replaces an aging 1970s facility with a welcoming, community-centered recreation building focused on therapeutic programming for people of all ages and abilities. SK&A provided structural engineering services for the project, including structural steel design support for the building’s sloping roofs and continuous sharp-edged eave conditions. Virginia Tech Academic Building One received an Award of Excellence in Education Architecture. Designed by @SmithGroup for Virginia Tech, with Whiting Turner Contracting Company as general contractor, the 11-story building anchors Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus in Alexandria and supports graduate education, research, collaboration, and the region’s growing technology ecosystem. SK&A provided testing and inspection services for the project, including special inspection and testing for structural steel, cold-formed steel, bolted and welded connections, fire-resistive materials, non-destructive examination, GPR scanning, and full-time quality assurance inspections of the roof assemblies.
