Praise God and THANK YOU all for your prayers - Cecie is coming home from the pet hospital this afternoon! It will probably take a couple of months for her neurological issues to resolve so she can regain control of her front legs, but meanwhile we are able to bring her home!
Debra Robic@Patriot_Mimaw

Our baby made it through the night much better than the vets thought she would - your prayers are working! She’s not out of the woods yet, but her prognosis is looking up. Please keep the prayers coming, friends! 🙏❤️

I don't believe I've introduced you to my cousin, Lady Delphinia, have I? My apologies for this oversight! Although cousin isn't quite an accurate title. You see, she is one of my ancestral relatives from the year 1897. Yes, you read that correctly - 1897. She's quite the (1/2)

@TimothyGunnells @ShawnNWhite Tim helped us start our NYE party tradition at the church building and it morphed into more of a board games focus over the years.

Very excited for tomorrow (New Year’s Eve). It is our annual board game day and I’m cooking up a double batch of my New Mexican Green Chili Beef Stew. It should feed between 25-30 folks. We are estimating about 18-20 people stopping by throughout the day. So, plenty if people want seconds or thirds and/or leftovers.

Quick Game Reviews: Fate of the Fellowship. So, this game has been generating a lot of hype. I gave in and bought it. For those who don't know, it's a Lord of the Rings themed game that uses the co-operative system from Pandemic. Here are my thoughts. When I first played Pandemic, I didn't really like it. Because I didn't like the theme. Disease control is not that interesting to me. But I did think that the system would be perfect for some kind of co-op wargame. Naturally, the series has gone in a wargamey direction with variations based on the fall of Rome and on Star Wars. Lord of the Rings is not exactly the next logical step, but I can see why they thought the system would work for it. The story of a Fellowship naturally lends itself to the co-operative nature of the game. And the armies of the Shadow spreading across Middle Earth certainly feels like a plague that you need to combat together.  Still, I didn't have high hopes when I first heard about this game. The dice tower and the Nazgul on floating stands seemed like a gimmick. And the map looked convoluted and confusing. I've played it multiple times now. And I love it. It's a gem. And I want to keep playing it, as I haven't actually won and I really haven't scratched the surface of effective strategy. So what makes it good? Well, the teamwork aspect is fantastic. Each player has 2 characters that they control, so even as a solo player you are co-operating in some sense. But the fact that you can travel together, achieve objectives together and frequently need to share cards (though more on this later - this is a weak point) means that the positive player interaction is ongoing and engaging. You have to plan, you have to co-ordinate multiple abilities, you have to find combos among the myriad of unique abilities on all the characters at the table. The simple rule of just being able to bring other characters along with you when you move is genius. It means you can save tons of actions by staying together and working as a Fellowship, even though you all have targets and objectives that are scattered all across the map. The replay value is enormous. You can have up to 10 different characters on the map, in many combinations, and they each have 2, 3 or more unique abilities. And those abilities aren't specifically situational or useless - they are all really strong and you will almost certainly use them multiple times each. Plus there is a huge variety of objective cards that you can use. Every game includes the "Destroy the Ring" objective (which is how you win) but there will also be 3 to 5 other objectives which you must achieve first. These are all different and all really challenging, and some will require the specific abilities of some characters and not others. The thematic integration is, overall, excellent. All the characters have special abilities that make sense. The shadow armies move across the map as threatening hordes, the good guys are nearly always outnumbered and cowering in their fortresses (called havens in the game). Frodo has to evade the Nazgul and sneak around the map relying on stealth. The Eye of Sauron shifts around the map and is devastating if it hits Frodo at the wrong time, but you can distract it by starting a battle somewhere else (reminiscent of the Black Gate). There is one area where the thematic integration falls flat - and unfortunately it forms a large part of the game. The vast majority of game actions are based on spending 4 resources/icons: cloaks, rings, swords and hearts. This is already a step removed from a game like War of the Ring, where you're not spending abstract resources but shifting characters and armies around and playing cards which are all tied to specific dramatic moments from the books. But there is another layer. Very often you need to share resources, and this befits the whole "Fellowship" basis of the game. Every card has a region. You can only share the card with another player if both of your characters are in the same space and in the same region mentioned on the card. So if Legolas has a "ring" card with the Eriador region on it and wants to give it to Frodo, both Legolas and Frodo need to be in the same space, in the Eriador region. It is not entirely clear what this actually represents, beyond a vague "working together" and "need to be in the right place at the right time". But I am more than willing to overlook this gap between the theme and the mechanics. It actually plays superbly well, and the frequent need to travel across the map and meet up with each other to share resources provides enough interesting decision points to justify itself. The biggest advantage of the game by far is the replay value. The huge variety of objectives and characters, the different strategies the shadow might use, plus varying difficulty, means there is an overwhelming amount of content in the box. And you can play solitaire, so you don't need a game group to explore all the intricacies of this beautiful system. Whether you're a die-hard wargamer, a eurogamer, a general LOTR fan or just someone who likes deep and engaging games - I can highly recommend this one. It's a winner.
