The April CPI report was a bit hotter than expected, with headline CPI rising 0.64%MoM vs. 0.6% consensus, and the year-over-year pace rose to 3.8%YoY vs. 3.7% consensus. The headline JOLTS job openings data for March in line with expectations. Job openings 6.87m vs. 6.85m consensus and 6.92m the previous month (revised up from 6.88m). This brought the job openings rate to 4.1%. On a positive note, the hiring rate rose 0.4% to 3.5%, but still below the 2017-2019 average of 3.8%. The layoff rate rose to 1.2% and the quits rate ticked up to 2.0%. The labor market continues to exhibit a “low hire low fire” dynamic.
