I’ve taken a bit of time out recently and even watched some proper TV for once — usually it’s news, politics, or sport. Channel 4’s Dirty Business is well worth watching if you care about our environment, our water systems our green spaces, and the health of the places we all rely on. It isn’t comfortable viewing, but it exposes what many people have been warning about for years. In 2024 alone, 4.7 million hours of sewage were released into UK waters. Like a boat without its bung — let that sink in. Millions of hours of pollution poured into the rivers, reservoirs, and coastlines where people swim, paddle, walk, relax, and reconnect with nature. Privatised water companies in England and Wales paid out £1.2 billion to shareholders during the same period. This is not just an environmental issue. It is a public health issue. It is a governance issue. It is a moral issue. The writers and actors behind Dirty Business deserve real credit for telling this story with clarity, courage, and humanity. Their work brings the truth into the light in a way that is impossible to ignore. Even more importantly, huge respect is owed to the real-life campaigners — the hearts and voices who have fought this battle for decades. Groups like Surfers Against Sewage, local river guardians, community volunteers, scientists, and everyday people who refused to look away. They were often dismissed or labelled as troublemakers, yet they were simply telling the truth long before anyone wanted to hear it. You don’t need to work on the water to care about this. Anyone who values clean spaces, healthy ecosystems, and the right to enjoy nature without worrying about contamination should be paying attention. Cleaner water should never be controversial. Accountability should never be optional. If you haven’t watched Dirty Business, it’s worth your time. If it makes you angry, that reaction is entirely justified. Leadership built from the inside out A leader’s standards begin long before they’re spoken out loud. They start with how you treat yourself, how you speak to yourself, and the level of respect you demand from your own behaviour. When that foundation is solid, everything else you expect from others becomes clear, consistent, and non‑negotiable. Strong leadership isn’t about controlling people. It’s about controlling your own conduct so precisely that others understand the level without needing a reminder. When you hold yourself to a higher standard, three things happen: your behaviour becomes the benchmark, your expectations become obvious, and your presence sets the culture. • Treat yourself the way you want others to treat you. If you accept excuses from yourself, you’ll accept them from others. If you demand better from yourself, people will feel that standard the moment they step into the room. • Talk to yourself the way you expect others to talk to you. The internal voice becomes the external tone. Leaders don’t tear themselves down; they use direct, honest, constructive language — the same language they expect from their teams. • Respect is earned, not given — and the first person you earn it from is yourself. When you operate with self‑respect, you walk differently, decide differently, and lead differently. People recognise that energy and rise to it. Leadership is not a performance. It’s a standard you live, consistently, especially when no one is watching. When you treat yourself with clarity, discipline, and respect, you set the tone for everyone around you — without raising your voice or repeating yourself.

I’m on a 4.5hr train journey, 30 mins in and just thrown beer over my laptop keyboard. It no longer works. I could: 1) desperately try to dry it out 2) drink more lunchtime beer You decide
