I spoke with over a dozen TSA agents today. None of them have been paid in 2 months. Here’s what they told me: “I had to sell my car to pay my mortgage” “I work 12 hour shifts and don’t see my kids. Now I can’t even afford to buy my family dinner.” “I’m going to have to quit this month and find another job.” “My wife had to go back to work” “I can’t afford basic groceries” “I have no more savings left.” “This makes no sense. ICE is funded through 2030. Democrats are just punishing us.” One thing became clear after today: Democrats targeting TSA is morally depraved. It hurts passengers and law enforcement alike. Politicians should NOT be able to destroy innocent people’s lives to score cheap political theater points. Democrats are evil for this. They just want to see Americans suffer to protect illegals and illegal voting.

And in Oregon we are losing student population. Weird. Can't be cause and effect, just can't. Maybe we ought to try things in education that actually work, that empower and engage parents? Just a thought.

Saying Jesus would have supported abortion is madness. This cancer will be the way Islam will conquer America. While Americans diminish their numbers promoting homosexual sex, slaughter of the unborn, and hatred of men and the nuclear family, Islam is breeding like flies.

Prioritizing the welfare state starts in K-12 education. Its called indoctrination. Learn less academics, add in feelings of despair for being who one is, reference "government programs will help", then add a belief that socialism is good. Repeat. This is where the nation is at in public education.

@carleolson I agree. This shows a generational gap in educational foundations in writing and punctuation. We've lost so much as a society.

The use of em-dashes, in my experience, is often an indication of a good thinker and writer who knows how to bracket, emphasize, and make asides in sophisticated ways. But, I might be biased—say it isn't so!—because I use them a lot. And I've written several books and around a thousand published essays—and have been a professional editor for nearly 25 years.

I looked to see if candidates for Oregon governor had anything about AI on their websites. There wasn't anything. However, I did see lots of em-dashes on Ed Diehl's website. I don't know if Diehl used AI to write his website, but em-dashes are typical of AI writing.

@horvick @horvick My comments are not meant as an insult; the comments are a stark reality of how much education continues to decline in this country. Welfare state expansion is real.

Let me help here, even if not asked. This is a proof without a theorem. I learned dashes in elementary school decades ago—em, en, and hyphen. Each serves a purpose; it’s about emphasis and clarity. Like much of education today, that foundation has diminished, and proper writing and punctuation are fading. There you have it—a generation gap where even the basics aren’t being passed on. The dumbing down of education now reaches down to punctuation itself. Oregon needs to do better.

Oregon needs to go back to basics. Ideology has no place in the classroom. Teaching children how to learn is far more important than pushing ideological “what to think” content. Our recent NAEP scores prove it — Oregon ranks near the bottom nationally in fourth-grade math (around 48th) and reading (around 46th), with eighth-grade results also lagging. This academic failure is compounded by one of the highest chronic absenteeism rates in the nation, currently around 33%. Students frequently report being bored in school as a key reason they stay home. Research shows the top drivers of absenteeism are health and mental health challenges, socioeconomic barriers (poverty, transportation, housing), and disengagement — including boredom from irrelevant or ideological instruction. High absenteeism is not a partisan issue. Among the states with the highest chronic absenteeism rates, approximately 60% are Democrat-controlled. Separately, Oregon has the highest per-capita population of registered sex offenders in America. While arrest records do not show we have disproportionately more of them physically present in schools than other states, the sheer size of our registry demands far stronger safeguards, visitor checks, and notification policies to keep our kids safe. It’s time to remove ideological distractions, refocus on fundamentals, and put Oregon students first.
