Let's talk fodder. Several of you expressed interest, so here's a quick rundown.
Chickens naturally eat grass. Most people don't know that, they think chickens peck corn and seed exclusively. But they will eat anything that's green including grass, weeds, flowers, your entire vegetable garden... 😂
When you purchase free range, farm-raised eggs you will notice the yolks are almost orange. Fun fact, the chlorophyll in green plants is what gives them that beautiful color. It also enhances the vitamins in the egg.
Obviously, in the winter, there is no green grass in most areas. To mimic this, you can simply sprout any grain, seed, or legume you have. The clear egg cartons work great for this if you only have a few chickens. Otherwise, go for cake pans, or even sheet pans.
Simply spread the seed and soak it. Some of the larger seeds and legumes benefit from a tiny bit of seed starter soil. Cover with plastic wrap or a clear lid, and let the magic happen. In 3 to 7 days you will have a banquet for your chickens.
Wheat, rye, and oats are very easy to grow. Within 5 days they can be 4 in tall. Beets and broccoli are also easy.
If you want to really spoil them, use a large pot with cheap potting soil. This time of year, after they eat the sprouts, they will dust bathe in the new soil which is so beneficial.
