@MaryBowdenMD @SeeFisch Being a student never ends but we don’t acknowledge that. We instead draw lines between who we consider to be students and who we consider not to be students. Medical residents are not considered to be medical students. The distinction between the two, while arbitrary, is clear.

@SeeFisch Residents are (supposedly) under constant supervision from attendings. They take tests. They are constantly having to answer questions and prove their merit. How are they not students?

This blows my mind. Algebra 1 is offered in 7th grade in Florida schools for advanced students and they go on to Geometry in 8th grade. I can't wrap my head around making advanced students in San Francisco wait until 9th grade for Algebra. 😱

American is a healthy 28 year old, he decided to skip paying for health insurance this year because the cheapest plan was $900 per month with a high deductible
He had to spend 2 nights in the ER without insurance, he breaks down the bill
“This is my receipt from spending 2 days in the hospital:
- It totaled about $24,000
- My CT scan alone was $8,300
- Laboratory, 6,000
- IV therapy, $1,020, $4,000 in total
And while $24,000 seems like a lot of money, let me show you something. This is what I'm actually paying, $2,478
because when you don't have insurance, these hospitals give you a discount. They discounted $22,000 off of this bill”
“But if I had insurance, I wouldn't have gotten that discount. So it would've been a $24,000 bill billed to my insurance, and then my insurance would've said, ‘Hey, you have a $5,000 deductible. You need to pay $5,000 for this last emergency room visit.’
Then you tack on the $900 a month that I'd be paying for that insurance. I'd be paying $20K this year for healthcare.
So the craziest part about this is even if I have another hospital visit, by the end of this year, I'm still gonna be paying less than I would if I had insurance. At minimum, my cost for healthcare this year would've been $20,000 with insurance. Right now I'm at $2,400.”

At my local liberal elite coffee shop a millennial woman is in tears because she can’t afford private school tuition.
She’s on speakerphone so everyone hears. She qualifies for food stamps. She is an immigrant and a lesbian.
Everyone is waiting for her to get off the phone to console her.
OK. BUT… she just spent $3,000 on airline tickets for a vacation and booked $400 meal one of the nights. And summer camp for her kids while she goes.
Every millennial I know is absolutely addicted to travel to foreign nations. WTF. They talk about it like it’s a human right.
Why the F can’t she put her kids into her Subaru and drive them to Florida like a normal person? Or the thousands of great coastal vacation spots between Bar Harbor Maine and Key West.
Why is nobody suggesting this to her?
And it’s not just her. My millennial friends who have money are constantly jumping on planes overseas. Like if they go more than two months without travel they start freaking out.
I’m generation x. I don’t get it. Someone please explain this to me in crayons.
I mean I love traveling too but holy crap does it get expensive fast. Are these people all just in crazy debt?
