@AaronJBoucher Because he's going into it (hopefully) transparent about him intending to be PM. People will have their minds focused by that. He's the country's most popular Labour politician and he's giving people who want Starmer out but could still vote Labour in the future that option.

I genuinely don’t understand the plan here. This is one of the more narrow victories for Labour and local elections suggest this as an easy win for Reform. Burnham also doesn’t benefit from this constituency being in Greater Manchester, where his approval is highest.

@Steven_Swinford @FraserNelson No-one outside of the parliamentary Labour Party wants Streeting as PM. We want stability in the highest office. We were sick of this with the Tories, and hoped Labour would not indulge in this Macbeth-level ambition and back-stabbing.

Totally surreal situation now: 1) Wes Streeting was preparing to launch today but may now delay because he is said to be struggling to get the numbers. His people deny this - they say he has the numbers - but say that things have changed and more cabinet ministers are going over the top and pressing for Starmer to go. But... 2) Keir Starmer insists he is going nowhere. The number calling for him to go remains at 92 - where it's been for the last 24 hours - equivalent to nearly a third of backbenchers. His allies say that good news on economy and NHS makes his case for him. He is going fo fight on 3) Enter Angela Rayner. The former Deputy PM says she has been cleared by HMRC and doesn't rule out a challenge is Streeting succeeds in triggering a contest 3) None of this is remotely sustainable. How can you have a senior Cabinet minister publicly positioning himself for a run at Number 10? How can you have a third of backbenchers publicly calling for the PM to go. 4) Someone - either Streeting or Starmer - will have to give. Otherwise the government is going to be paralysed for the forseeable future, with Starmer in office but fighting for his life and Streeting ready to go but refraining from firing the starting gun.

Political parties are like armies, they require discipline to function. The argument “there are more MPs backing Starmer than want him gone” is irrelevant. If two thirds of your troops are loyal, and a third are in open mutiny then you can longer function as a viable force.

It's all got a bit messy. And we will have to see how things play out. But my understanding is Keir Starmer is not in denial about the political realities. He is looking for a dignified way of ending all this. But he doesn't want to be seen to be forced out.
