Big news in US solar policy dropped today. Section 201 bifacial module exemption is out (huge deal; also cell quota is likely going up to support US module mfg), new domestic content guidance and anti-stockpiling measures (180 day max hold period), anti-circumvention exemption over in June. This is on top of the (mostly symbolic) Section 301 tariff increases on cells/modules from China on Tuesday. If domestic mfg of solar is the goal (per IRA), @WhiteHouse is pulling out all the stops to make it happen. Oh yeah and @ENERGY just announced $44M for advanced solar tech (@SwiftSolarPV got the biggest perovskite award of $7M for next-gen perov-silicon tandems, very excited to continue our long collab with @eeregov toward US manufacturing)

@AukeHoekstra @hausfath I agree that the term is overused, mostly because many don’t build and maintain models for individual assets. (eg. aircraft engines, gas turbines, …)

@AukeHoekstra @hausfath I’m catching this late so I’ve had both a coffee and a beer already, but my experience with digital twins is that they represent not only the model of an asset, but include history of maintenance, upgrades, weather events, etc. So they are a distinct model of THIS asset.

A “digital twin” is just a pretentious name for a model.

@drvolts GE/Prolec announced a flexible transformer a few years ago to address this. It might be interesting to check out where that development is now.

@drvolts Seriously long lead times and expense are in part due to the bespoke nature of transformer design. They are essentially tailored to the application that you want, the location where it goes, the voltage it will handle, the power that you need, etc.

After (finally) finishing the holiday puzzle, we can confirm that Maggie ate 15.5 pieces. Here she is trying to act innocent.

In the past two weeks, I think EVERY media outlet has written a story w/headlines like "EV sales are slowing" or "automakers are pulling back" from EVs. All present recent developments as a major setback. But are they? Are they really slowing? Is this 'red alert' moment? A 🧵...

This feels right on a couple levels. Building more [chip/battery/solar/etc] factories forges people who can build even more factories for more technologies. And manufacturing is ground truth. Many researchers want to work on impactful real-world problems—few know where to look.

This is one of the most under appreciated aspects of the benefits that will come from the latest round of industrial investment in the US (CHIPS, BIL, IRA). By ‘doing more’ we’ll be building the talent to ‘do more’. 💪

One argument for attempting to reinvigorate domestic manufacturing in chips, batteries etc is basically “insurance” against future disruptions (a la Covid, War etc). And then another is basically this. That to advance technologically, you need more people doing the doing.

@JacquelynGill I have this same impairment. One time I went down a medical terminology rabbit hole for some reason and couldn’t recover. After gems like “M as in mammogram” and “A as in aneurysm” the service worker paused me to ask if I was OK. 🤦🏽‍♀️
