In a sea of AI-in-medicine junk pieces which either a) grossly overstate AI’s current doctor-replacing capabilities or b) dismiss the real seismic change potential generative AI may hold for medicine’s future, @Bob_Wachter delivers clear eyed and well-balanced food for thought.

A bit of an uncomfortable post coming out tomorrow - some honest career advice, especially for people looking for jobs in health tech I've been having a lot of chats with people interested in getting a job at a healthcare startup. It's pretty clear that no one has given them an honest reality check of their situation or made them confront difficult tradeoff decisions when choosing different job options. So tomorrow's post is about some of the uncomfortable truths and realities you should be asking yourself as you look for a job. I also asked a bunch of people on the hiring side what they wish they could tell candidates but can't (for obvious reasons) and included a bunch of anonymized advice into it.

We should value a few high quality first author publications, reflective of in-depth project management and execution, and showcasing true ownership and subject mastery. Time is better spent pursing these than finding a 25th 3rd author contribution to a random poster.

This is bad. It’s not feasible to publish 30+ high quality manuscripts as a med student. The obsession with quantity prioritizes quick easy pubs, and actively discourages substantive research. It teaches to pick projects based on speed and not actual impact, and discourages risk.

The worst conditions you can imagine are a mutation and/or a plane flight away. The CDC is a critical part of the shield that lets you live a more pathogen-free life than any other humans have enjoyed in history. I shudder to think of life without it functioning at its best.

On one hand: this is a problem with current AI-powered models, and it should be fixed. On another hand: copyforwards, chart inaccuracies, and general bloat have made current human-powered transcriptions pretty hallucinatory as well.
