I think people underestimate how many parents (especially in low income families) are scared of their own children. I saw it all the time and it was very sad.

This teacher highlights a huge problem going on with parenting. She has a meeting with a student’s mom. She has a student who is failing every class with a 12% grade. He is sleeping through school because he’s up till 2-3am gaming. Mom’s response? “I don’t want to take the games away… he’ll be mad at me.” A grown woman said that with a straight face. My wife taught in public schools for 10 years before moving onto the collegiate level and came home with these exact stories. Yes, teachers and public education have plenty of their own problems—but this? This is parents abdicating their actual job. You can’t outsource discipline and basic boundaries to teachers, then act shocked when kids fail and teachers burn out. Parenting means being the adult. Even when it’s uncomfortable. Especially when it’s uncomfortable. End of story!

I’ve literally had the same conversation with many parents who ‘don’t want their kids mat them for taking away their games or phone’ “Outsourcing Discipline” is my new favorite term for bad parenting

I put my notice in last week at a job I’ve been doing for 11 years now. (A third of my life!) my kids were tiptoeing around their angry mother who never got to just stop and play with them, always getting off work and jumping on a long to do list of chores. I lost all energy and love for my hobbies. I wasn’t reaching out to friends, and if I did it was all surface level. Any free time I’ve had I was spending with dark thoughts, or no thoughts at all. First time in my entire life since I was a teen that I’ve had to let go and depend on someone else. I’m scared to death even though I prepared and saved for this, but hopefully I can find a love for life again by just being Mom for a while and recentering on what is most important.
