This miscast of Snape in Harry Potter is a good example of race swapping changing an entire story. If Snape is Black, despite books saying he’s White, then Harry is now suspicious that the only Black teacher at Hogwarts is stealing and his Dad bullied a Black kid by hanging him. This seems like a major story change to introduce the idea of racism, and it strays from the source material. 🥴

I would never want to follow Alan Rickman for starters.
Making the character of Snape black is going to introduce a racism angle that these storytellers are 100% going to screw up. They either ignore it - which is bad. Or address it - which will be entirely unsupported by the original story.
To a lesser degree they are going to have this issue with Hermoine as well. Watching kids sling “mud blood” at the only brown kid in the trio. 🫠

I'm not the first person to think about this, but now we see how Essiedu looks in the role. And yeah, "Snape's Worst Memory" (Order of the Phoenix) is simply not going to work well in this show, if it ever gets there.

I’m sorry, but this is just ridiculous. Race swapping Snape and most of the students, including Hermione, completely kills the immersion in HBO’s Harry Potter show.
Snape was written as a thin, greasy haired man with a pale, sneering face. Turning the story into one about racism destroys its internal themes, and ruins the story.
This show was over for me the moment it chose tokenism over staying faithful to the books.

I maintain my opinion that Maegor - although he probably really was a cruel and harsh man - was so hated by the maesters that certain details of his reign were grossly embellished by them.
At the end of the day, you’re talking about a man who ended the Faith Militant and reduced the influence of the institution altogether. No doubt they hated his guts for doing that. That’s why he’s described as the “most evil of kings”.
