The Krankenversicherung – health insurance. Legally mandatory from day one. Not optional. Not something to sort out later. The Tarifvertrag – the collective wage agreement. Knowing it exists means knowing your rights before your employer assumes you don't. The Mietvertrag – the rental contract. Every clause matters. Germans read every clause. You should too. Language gets you in the door. Knowing the system keeps you in the room. Both matter. Most courses only teach you one.

Germany offers one year paid parental leave, 2 years unpaid, almost fully subsidized daycare, 260 per month per child etc. and this has done nothing for the birth rate. All these policies are USELESS. Having children is a cultural issue.

On average, young Aussies want 2-2.5 kids. So our birth rate hasn’t collapsed because we stopped wanting kids. It’s that we’ve made housing as the foundation for building a family an impossible luxury. We need our governments to start treating our declining birth rate as a national priority.
