Today @instituteGC, we publish a paper calling on govts to support the transition away from industrial animal ag and towards alternative proteins. Scaling these technologies is one of the most important innovation challenges of this decade. Here’s why: 🧵 institute.global/policy/protein…

Up to 1,000 people a day are moving onto health-related benefits, with spending projected to reach around £73bn by the end of the decade. Our paper sets out plans for an “emergency handbrake” to slow the flow of new claims, stabilise the system, and redirect support to where it's needed most. Less ideology and more common sense on energy policy also means acknowledging that Britain's only way to energy security & cheaper electricity long term is through clean power. This means not abandoning net zero by 2050. We're taking that pragmatic position - the Tories are not.
Kemi Badenoch@KemiBadenoch

Cheap energy needs less ideology and more common sense. Glad to see the Tony Blair Institute is catching up with Conservative policy. Our plan to Axe the Carbon Tax and scrap old wind subsidies would cut electricity bills by 20%.

Some interesting graphics in the FT on the impact that extreme weather is having on food prices. We look into this in our recent paper, and set out actions governments can take to boost agricultural resilience institute.global/insights/clima…

Strengthening agricultural resilience is not just a development issue. In an age of escalating climate-related disasters, it is a geopolitical imperative, argues @InstituteGC’s @DaceHermione. bit.ly/41aUlfR

Imports of hormone treated beef and chlorinated chicken remain illegal. Any agricultural imports coming into the UK will have to meet our high food (SPS) standards. 3/5🧵

Green industrial strategy has the potential to boost economic growth and accelerate the UK’s progress towards #netzero. But realising this ambition requires coherent, long-term policymaking. The choice for government is clear: the UK must seize this moment to shape its industrial future in which green growth is an important part but not the sole focus. Glad to see this today. Very important as govt seeks to balance objectives on renewables / housing / nature / infrastructure and - importantly - agriculture and food production edie.net/uk-government-…

Hard to overstate quite how worrying the latest government food security report is. A predictable and predicted slow-motion disaster being allowed to play itself out. businessgreen.com/news-analysis/…

I think we need to start viewing obesity and diet-related disease as related but distinct issues, with different toolkits to address them. Thin people can suffer from diet-related disease, and obesity drugs won't be the fix ft.com/content/15ff92…

Get a cup of coffee and listen to Hannah Ritchie (Our World in Data; Uni Oxford) explain in 12 minutes how we can solve the climate crisis. We have the means to do it. But we must overcome the powerful resistance by those who benefit from the current fossil fuel system.

In our new report, "From Crisis to Conflict: Climate Change and Violent Extremism in the Sahel," @InstituteGC explores how climate-driven resource scarcity is fueling escalating conflict in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Let’s unpack👇

It's always tough to look back at things we wish we had done differently. But it’s so important because it’s how we learn and grow, right? Huge respect for the politicians who shared their biggest regret - that they didn't take their opportunity to transform and improve child health. What matters now is how we learn and change - relentless, bold and no excuses. No regrets. @Keir_Starmer @wesstreeting Really great work from @DollyvanT and @HenryDimbleby on this report 👏
