It’s good advice to get checked. It’s also true that getting checked does not equal avoiding aortic dissection. My dad was up to date on all his check-ups (and also active and lowkey kind of health-obsessed if anything) and he, too, died of an aortic dissection at 69. The idea that getting checked enough means it won’t happen to us or our loved ones is something we tell ourselves to feel better rather than the truth.

This is so rude and also not true. My dad had his aorta checked 5-6 months before his dissection. You can get all of your checks done and STILL have an aortic dissection. I questioned even sharing the info I've learned because I knew I would get comments like this that would make me hot and nauseous. And yet I did it anyway.

My aunt is the legendary singer Patti LaBelle. She has performed our National Anthem FOUR different times at major national sporting events. Not once did she ever sing the Black National Anthem. She ALWAYS performed "The Star-Spangled Banner." And tomorrow, she will do it again at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. Why? Because she will be singing to EVERY AMERICAN - not just some of us. I had a great GP who saw tropinin in my blood from when I went to ER with a racing heart. I was only 55. The ER doctor spoke to me about anxiety and discharged me. I knew something was up. My GP ordered a nuclear stress test. A week later I went in for a catheterization with a 90% blockage. Intervention cardiologist told me it wasn’t a matter of if I had a heart attack, it was when. So thankful to my GP. Tropinin is an enzyme given off by heart muscle and can mean damage.
