It has all the makings of a true pitching duel, and Wheeler feels like he has something to prove after being left off the All-Star roster. He even declined the replacement offer. Whether that's extra motivation or not, I expect him to come out dealing. Wheeler has found another gear lately, recording 7+ strikeouts in four of his last five starts, including outings of 10 and 14 punchouts in his last two. His season average sits right at 7 K's, and the underlying metrics continue to support it: • 94th percentile K% (29.4%) • 91st percentile SwStr% (14.8%) • 97th percentile Chase Rate • 90th percentile xBA allowed (.203) • 96th percentile xwOBA allowed (.256) Detroit has several hitters who can fuel this over: • Jake Outman — 45.4% K% • Spencer Torkelson — 33.8% • Kerry Carpenter — 30.7% • Riley Greene — 25.4% His pitch mix is another reason I like this spot. Wheeler's four-seam fastball has held hitters to a .150 batting average, while both his slider (40.5% whiff) and splitter (41.8% whiff) consistently generate swing-and-miss. He's doing exactly what you want from a middle-of-the-order bat right now—consistently getting on base and driving in runs. • He's cleared this line in 7 of his last 11 games with a 2.5 HRR average over that span, including games of 5, 4, 6, 4, and 3 HRR. • His batting average has climbed to .282 over this recent stretch after sitting at just .197 on the season, showing how much better he's seeing the ball. • Machado has already seen Kevin Gausman well, going 1-for-3 with 2 total bases in their recent meetings. • The underlying matchup is solid as well. Machado owns a .318 xwOBA, .414 xSLG, 43.5% hard-hit rate, 10.6% barrel rate, and 89.5 MPH average exit velocity this season, giving him plenty of upside to cash this in multiple ways. • Whether it's a couple of knocks, getting on base ahead of the heart of the lineup, or driving runners in, Machado has been finding ways to fill the stat sheet consistently. The Phillies have struggled against quality changeups and sliders, while Skubal’s changeup has generated a 48.8% whiff rate with opponents hitting just .190 against it. His slider has also produced a 30.6% whiff rate, giving him two legitimate put-away pitches against this lineup. Skubal heads into the All-Star break in elite form, recording 8+ strikeouts in each of his last four starts.
