@DaleSearle2

The citizen should be the lawmaker. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who supervises those in charge? If it ain't the populace, it ain't direct democracy!

“The path to humanitarianism lies in a world of direct democracies, where public officials are selected by lottery and act solely on behalf of the citizens—eliminating corruption, abuse of power, and the need for elections or political appointments.”

@EdwardJDavey To protect its position, the EU enforces a strict "pay-to-play" & "follow-the-rules" policy. Under a customs union, the UK would lose out by becoming a rule-taker with no vote, paying billions to Brussels, and giving up the freedom to make independent global trade deals.

I’ve written to the Prime Minister urging him to give Labour MPs a free vote on our amendment to the King’s Speech. A UK-EU Customs Union is a vital first step in rebuilding our relationship with Europe. MPs must be free to vote for what is best for our economy and our country.

@Saganismm Is the real alternative a system of root subsidiarity? True democracy must grow from the bottom up, replacing an elected elite with power which resides permanently with the people.

"I think it's clear that none of the forms of government that exist in any of the two hundred or so countries on the earth today are applicable to the middle of the next century. Not a one. We have to get from here to there somehow. How can you do that without disturbing the here? The world is changing at an incredibly rapid pace. Human survival depends on dealing with those changes, but governments generally are concerned with changing nothing. I think that any nation with a serious concern about the future would be busy inventing experimental communities to try, on a practical basis, to find the society that is going to work in the middle of the twenty-first century." - Carl Sagan

@LordRickettsP @UKHouseofLords Does the constitutional elite really save us from authoritarianism? By defending a system based on central appointments and electoral autocracy, they defend the very concentration of power which makes it possible.

A moving valedictory speech @UKHouseofLords from the great Lord Peter Hennessy, on the state of the constitution. ‘It is the politics of decency that is our greatest protection against a slide into the politics of despair, out of whose dark crevices authoritarianism can slink’.

@Naranjades2 @HoTPOfficial Elections just give us a choice of autocrats while the Magna Carta gathers dust. We need a written Bill of Rights that strips power from Westminster and vests it directly in everyday people and their communities, creating accountability to stop this political chaos.

I love that site it’s so eye opening . To the point the whole way that British politics was formed , proves to me that democracy is an illusion .. I’d like to see a total new system with an actual written constitution and written bill of rights , (& yes I’m aware that we have the Magna Carta but only two laws are used today.) And I want a body above Parliament so that the BS we are going through now would never ever happen again . I don’t think that’s too much to ask ?

Did you know that a party can win a majority of seats in Parliament on less than 35% of the total votes cast? In 2024, Labour won 63% of the seats on 34% of the vote, the lowest share of any governing party since 1830. Millions of votes cast for other parties had no influence on the result whatsoever. These are not arguments for any particular party or electoral reform position. They are the structural conditions that shape every political outcome in this country. Understanding them is where change begins.

@readwithai @Naranjades2 @HoTPOfficial The 'who controls God' dilemma only exists because we keep trying to centralise power at the top. The answer isn't fighting for control of Westminster or the courts. It’s dissolving that central power entirely and distributing it to the absolute base through root subsidiarity.

@Naranjades2 @HoTPOfficial Sure... but fundamentally you always get a problem of "who controls God" at some level you just need people with power fighting for what they think is right

@Naranjades2 @readwithai @HoTPOfficial Spot on. Patching a broken system with an overhaul of judges won’t fix British politics. True democracy isn't about electing rulers or trusting courts—it’s about root subsidiarity. Power belongs at the grassroots, where the people decide directly, not top-down elites.

@afneil Nationalise water companies for a £1 - debt free. Achievable with legislation and allow the lenders to pursue present and past directors and shareholders for monies owed. All will be out of pocket and it will be a salutary lesson well learnt and remembered by asset strippers.

OK — you tell me — how do you nationalise energy, water and ‘housing’ (whatever that means) without borrowing tens of billions more to do so?
The Red Resistance (Keith Davies)@resistance_red

@afneil Are you happy with ANYONE trying to do something different Andrew. He has been a big success in Manchester. Maybe he knows something. You've derided any new ideas as the status quo fails catastrophically. Do you want the far right spivs with their huge medical bills policies?

@joshsimonsmp Spot on about the broken establishment, but swapping the leader won't fix a top-down system. True democracy isn't about electing a better politician to make choices for us; it’s about putting the power to vote on every issue directly into the hands of the people.

For Westminster, this is a good summary of what people are saying on the doors in Makerfield. From a constituent of mine on a Reform page: "I'll probably get slated for this especially in this forum but hear me out. I've spent my whole adult life wishing that someone like me, from a working class background and from the North was leading our country. All I've seen in my lifetime is public school boys telling me how things are and to be honest, coming from a family of little to no wealth, it makes my blood boil. To have the chance of a prime minister who is born and bred in my neck of the woods. Understands the environment I grew up in if nothing else. And, more so, has a chance to take that top job and maybe, just maybe, make decisions that make a difference to people like me. That's what @AndyBurnhamGM represents for me. This feels like a one time in a generation chance to get someone in who isn't part of the establishment and may do things differently than has been done before. If people vote Reform, it won't put them in power. If they won it would merely be something to brag about but wouldn't make any fundamental difference to mine or your way of life. Alteratively, if Andy wins, it's likely he'll become our new prime minister and maybe, just maybe, we'll feel the difference. If not, vote Reform in the next general election and I'll join you. Peace out 📷"

Gordon Brown - now back in government as a special envoy - sits in the Lords as a life peer. Harriet Harman - also back as an adviser - does too. The second chamber is literally populated by the people currently advising the Prime Minister. Should it be elected? Yes or no?

In a true democracy, protests are unnecessary. Legitimate grievances are addressed directly through subsidiarity—handling issues at the most local and appropriate level—along with petitions and referendums.

I’ll always champion peaceful protest. But the Unite the Kingdom march organisers are peddling hatred and division. We’ve already blocked visas for far-right agitators who want to come here to spew their extremist views. They don't speak for the decent, fair, respectful Britain I know.

@JamesMelville If Scotland votes yes to independence, a subsequent UK-wide referendum would be held in which all people across Great Britain and Northern Ireland — including the people of Scotland — would need to approve Scotland leaving the United Kingdom. True democracy rules.
