I can. I would think its the standard today. But sometimes I wonder if division of labor could be exploited better. Imagine a theory paper was required to state how the theory (in principle at least) could be rejected. Would empirical specialists follow up? Progress?

Can you imagine something like this happening in today’s academic environment? David Friedman had one of his papers rejected by George Stigler himself on the grounds that his paper needed evidence, not just theory. Friedman, the son of the late Milton Friedman, is grateful that the rejection forced him to think more clearly about his theory and how to prove it. We need this kind of rigor back.
