A Miami couple who married during World War II is now making history for a love story that has lasted more than 8 decades.
Eleanor Gittens, 107, and Lyle Gittens, 108, were officially confirmed on November 4, 2025 as the world's longest married couple. The recognition came from LongeviQuest in partnership with Guinness World Records.
The couple lives in Miami, Florida, and they also hold the record for the oldest married couple ever documented, with a combined age of 216 years and 132 days.
When asked about the secret to their marriage, Eleanor said, "We love each other."
The pair first met in 1941 while attending Clark Atlanta University. Eleanor had gone to watch Lyle play basketball against Morehouse College. They married on June 4, 1942 in Bradenton during a short leave from Lyle's Army training. During the war, Eleanor worked in payroll at an aircraft parts company in New York while Lyle served in Italy with the 92nd Infantry Division.
The couple stayed connected through letters until they reunited after the war. More than 80 years later, they’re love is still going strong.
Lyle summed up their bond in a few words. "I love my wife. It's simple."
