@Iron_Spike I have read so much Dav Pilkey to my 6yo. Captain Underpants is meh, but Dog Man is shockingly good.

@JmacDotOrg I read it as cynical but not dismissive, a word used by someone in HR who doesn’t give a fuck about why they’re trying to hire someone not a white male but if that’s what the boss wants then let’s do this thing.

“Diverse” as meaning “non-white straight cis male [etc]” has been culturally greenlit for good-faith application when describing individuals—correct? This has really snuck up on me! As recently as last year it seemed discouraged as cynically dismissive, as in “diversity hire”.

@jamesdnicoll Reminds me of Pest Control, where an exterminator learns the vital importance of clarity in advertising certain services.

@TheMerovius Because after the abolition of slavery, the US innovated in many ways to ensure that former slaves could not exercise their right to vote. Voter registration is part of a system literally designed to disenfranchise people.

@jamesdnicoll Walter Jon Williams’s City on Fire is about trying to build something better after the revolution, while dealing with messy political realities.

@Iron_Spike I loved that book. My mom made me the best gnome costume one Halloween. We measured the hat/gnome ratio on the cover of the book to make sure we got the size right.

Do u know any opensource #golang projects that distribute binary artifacts (instead of asking users to run 'go install')? Please let me know.

@zarfeblong My favorite bit of dialogue design in GoW is how you can land the boat in the middle of a story, and Kratos will make a comment about how he’ll continue it later. And then he does. No sitting around in terror of missing something by interrupting it!

@TheMerovius The Japanese word “zabuton” (trousers) and the English word “sabaton” (armor boots) also have the same root. (Also, “hose” still refers to a tight leg covering in English, mostly only women’s clothing these days but used to be a standard male style.)

@NeolithicSheep People have survived post-symptomatic rabies now! Treatment involves a medical coma and is far from a guaranteed success, but it’s not a 100% guaranteed death sentence any more. aaas.org/surviving-rabi…

@kchironis A thing I adore about these games is the texture of the spaces you pass through. The permutation of enemies has a weight and significance to it. I feel like I’m in conversation with the designer, laughing together about how they got me here, how I saw through them there.

one of my favorite things to do is play co-op in an area i know very well and watch as players who haven't been through a section before approach it. although there are permutations, most players perceive enemies in the same order and have a very "similar" experience play out.

i wanna talk about my favorite elden ring/bloodborne encounter design thing because it's so simple but it forms the backbone pattern for like 50% of these games' encounter design. i call it the triple zombie combo. there you are, outside a room. you look & see an enemy inside.

@shaenongarrity @Iron_Spike I was at AX just after that movie came out, and someone asked Ikuhara WTF it was about. “I really wanted to turn Utena and Anthy into cars,” he replied.

@bradfitz They told me about how magical the first steps are, the first words, time they say “I love you.” They did not tell me all these are minor and inconsequential moments compared to the first time they wipe their own butt.

With kid1 doing increasingly well wiping and kid2 now starting to use the potty on his own, it looks like my days of child butt maintenance are numbered. Phew. 🚫💩🎉 (I mean, they've always been numbered theoretically, but now it feels like the finish line...)

@mcmillen Axiom Verge 1 has more shooting and a very old school Metroid vibe, AV2 has more exploring and drifts a bit further from Metroid visually and musically. Both good.

@davidcrawshaw @mdlayher @theprincessxena Just to put it in perspective, instead of this little kernel routing table hack, we added an optional variable-length field to every single IPv6 address in the system, and made every piece of software from now until eternity have to handle it somehow. <boggle>

What if Tailscale squatted on IPv6 prefix 0000:0000::/32 (aka ::/32)? That would make your Tailscale private IPv6 addresses as short and easy as IPv4.
