It’s because the formerly cool website where everyone used to spend their time telling jokes and bullshitting about movies got purchased by a human sinkhole then turned into a machine that hands out nickels to the dumbest people on earth whenever they issue the wettest fart

Contemplating a piece for TFM on why everyone is crashing out over THE ODYSSEY (not just the E*on of it all but the "dad" discourse, accents, etc.). My question: what is it about this movie that is making it such a lightning rod for discussion? Is it the Nolan? Or something else?

I see an awful lot of people who have never read the Odyssey are busily commentating on their tourist-brochure version of Ithaca instead of the Odyssey's Ithaca as described by Homer

No amount of PR can save Nolan's Odyssey from being a complete catastrophe. Whatever prestige he has built as a director so far will be obliterated. Sincerely, a very pissed-off Greek.

@tetsuya_00x Let me turn the question around: Weren't the people who committed the Sarin gas attacks Japanese? How could you then elect a Japanese PM? See how ridiculous that sounds? Zohran being Muslim doesn't make him responsible for something some other maniacs did.

@tetsuya_00x The answer is: Most Americans' families are immigrants within the past couple of generations. Real Americans don't distinguish. Immigrants can be as American as the next fella. (1/2)

@AncPhi This is an extremely stupid take. "Art should be unchanging and never reference other art." - You, basically. Truly a deeply, deeply dumb opinion

@SketchesbyBoze I'm reliably told by illiterate chuds on twitter that this is only permissible if the author writes "THIS IS AN ADAPTATION" as the first sentence.

They should make a version of The Odyssey, only it’s set in Dublin, Ireland in 1904 and Odysseus is a Jewish man whose wife is having an affair and Telemachus is an aspiring author who gets into fights in pubs and wanders the strand brooding on his mother’s death.

@chrisbriem Serious question, Chris, I normally follow you on the other site, but I dipped over here to respond to a friend - does it mess with your head that like 80% of the responses here are deeply, insanely racist? Like, eliminationist-level racism?

@johnfhuizing @TheAtlasSociety Your addition of the word "Communism" is a fabrication. The word Heinrich was referring to was "embitterment", as both the previous and next paragraphs makes clear. It's perfectly fine to dislike Karl Marx. But don't make shit up in order to do so.

"Frankly speaking, my dear Karl, I do not like this modern word (Communism), which all weaklings use to cloak their feelings when they quarrel with the world because they do not possess, without labour or trouble, well-furnished palaces with vast sums of money and elegant carriages. This embitterment disgusts me and you are the last person from whom I would expect it. What grounds can you have for it? Has not everything smiled on you ever since your cradle? Has not nature endowed you with magnificent talents? Have not your parents lavished affection on you? Have you ever up to now been unable to satisfy your reasonable wishes? And have you not carried away in the most incomprehensible fashion the heart of a girl whom thousands envy you? Yet the first untoward event, the first disappointed wish, evokes embitterment! Is that strength? Is that a manly character?" -Heinrich Marx, Karl Marx's father

@welshofer @brollbenny Counterpoint to both of you: if the number of spaces after a period is important, then the client should render the correct amount of space no matter how many "space characters" I insert.

What are some of the funniest bad ideas legendary musicians have had? So far I'm thinking the side of the George Harrison debut that's all unlistenable jams with bad titles, Prince's jazz fusion album about the weather, and METALLICA S&M
