The Katy Freeway is the widest highway in the world with 26 lanes, and yet it just serves the sprawl of Houston and through traffic. If cities like Tokyo don’t have freeways even remotely as wide, at what point do we admit that car dependency is a geometry problem?

my dad called me today stressed about property taxes. he’s 76, retired, and living on social security. been in the same house since the early 90s. mortgage paid off years ago. now his property taxes jumped from around $6,500 to over $8k. imagine spending your whole life paying off a home… and still being one tax bill away from losing it. that doesn’t sit right with me.

I love Savannah, but it is remarkable that the historic center has a population of only about 20k, with the greater metro area containing 400k+. Whenever I visit family in Savanah (burbs), I’m struck by how few people actually live in the historic part
