A shift at the dunk tank to help raise money for an important cause.
Earlier this month, a smart, silly, and otherwise healthy 6-year-old girl from Coal Harbour (near Port Hardy) named Isla was diagnosed with leukemia.
On July 7, Isla began experiencing severe lower back pain, prompting her parents, Danielle Shaw and Chris Corbett (Archie), to take her to the emergency department. It quickly became clear that she was seriously unwell, and she was airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
She has since been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a cancer of the blood and bone marrow.
Isla has begun intravenous chemotherapy and will remain in hospital while her response to treatment is closely monitored. Her oncology team anticipates she will require treatment for the next two and a half years, with ongoing care at BC Children’s Hospital.
At FILOMI Days, I was more than happy to take a couple of plunges in the dunk tank alongside Port Hardy mayor (and Isla’s grandmother) Pat Corbett-Labatt to help raise money in support of Isla’s family during this difficult time.
It’s beautiful to see the community come together like this to support Isla and her family when they need it most.
