Today, at 2:19pm PST, Varda will launch a factory into space for the first time in human history. It's the first step in its mission to expand the economic bounds of humankind. Mindblowing as that is, it's also, crucially, economically viable, thanks to cheap SpaceX launches and a dual-use business model. Varda does two things: 1. Manufacture drugs in space for use on earth. 2. Sell hypersonic testing on its reentry capsule to DoD. Because it needs to send the drugs it makes back down to earth at Mach 25+ anyway, it can offer DoD rideshares much more affordably than they can get elsewhere. And because DoD is covering part of the flight's cost, it can offer pharma lower upfront costs and share in the upside. Delian has said from Day 1 that in order for humanity to expand beyond our planet, we need to do it in a way that makes economic sense and incentivizes further expansion using the oldest trick in the book: money. Varda's launch today, then, is an important milestone in our species' history. If it succeeds, it will mark the moment at which we became able to profitably manufacture products outside of the home planet.
