The Universe and the Brain A Striking Similarity The human brain and the large-scale structure of the universe share a remarkable pattern. In your brain, about 86 billion neurons act as the basic units. They connect through long fibers called axons, sending electrical signals to synapses, the junctions where one neuron communicates with another. These connections form vast networks. Now look at the universe. Galaxies, each containing billions of stars, serve as the fundamental units. They are linked by massive threads of dark matter and gas known as cosmic filaments. Where these filaments meet, galaxies cluster together, interacting through gravity. Over time, active regions grow denser, pulling in more matter and forming superclusters. Both systems: Operate as interconnected networks. Transmit signals (electrical in the brain, gravitational in the universe). Strengthen frequently used pathways. Self-organize into larger, functional structures. This structural parallel, neurons and synapses mirroring galaxies and filaments. This leads us to explore whether the universe’s growth follows principles similar to neural development. In short: the same pattern that wires your thoughts may shape the architecture of the cosmos. 🧵
