Roman Anthony is a perfect example of why you can’t prospect off of boxscores. I said this months ago but coming out of HS there was no question about his speed or raw power. He did however have hit tool concerns. The Red Sox made it a point for him to work on his approach in Low A. And that’s all he’s been focusing on since he made his pro debut. People weren’t impressed by the .228 AVG, the 110 wRC+, and especially the .089 IS0 before his promotion. But if you’d been paying attention and knew he was only working on seeing pitches, you wouldn’t have been concerned. Since his promotion to A+ they took off the training wheels. Granted it’s a very small sample, but thru 8 games this is how his Low A and A+ stats look side by side: AVG .228 -> .290 ISO .089 -> .355 BB% 18.8% -> 18.4% K% 18.8% -> 28.9% SwStr% 6% -> 10.1% wRC+ 110 -> 183 HRs 1 (202 PA) -> 3 (38 PA) He’s still walking at a very high clip but he’s swinging freely now. Is he swinging and missing a little more? Sure. Is he striking out more? Sure. But those ISO and wRC+ jumps are insane. And he’s already hit 3 HR in just 8 games after hitting 1 in 42 Low A games. Get on the Roman Anthony hype train before it leaves the station. He could be the real deal.
