Everyone in the comments has the same rebuttal: if you can’t afford to tip, don’t eat out. Why is mandatory tipping just relegated to the food industry? Why don’t you tip the guy who changed your oil at the dealership? Why don’t you tip your UPS or USPS or Amazon driver when they deliver mail or packages? Why don’t you tip the cashier at the grocery or big box store? Why don’t you tip flight attendants? Why don’t you tip the worker who mixed your paint at Home Depot? Some are paid a salary some work hourly. What’s the difference?

I paid a $169.29 breakfast bill and left the tip at $0. Not because I didn’t notice the line — but because tipping, for me, is still a personal choice, not a fixed charge. The meal itself was fully paid for. The prices were set, the tax was added, and the total was clear. Covering that bill already supports the restaurant, its staff, and its operations. That part of the transaction was complete. What made this moment uncomfortable wasn’t the math — it was the pressure that followed. Tipping used to be a way to say “thank you” when service stood out. Somewhere along the way, it shifted into an expectation that can feel detached from the actual experience. Everyone comes in with different circumstances, different standards, and different limits. All the people saying that servers only make $2-$3 bucks an hour should get on indeed and look at whats being offered. Literally NO ONE will take a job offering that hourly wage. Tipping is not mandatory just bcus someone was nice. You’re supposed to be pleasant doing your job, that’s not a favor. There are many jobs where people work really hard and aren’t paid much but you don’t tip them. Like teachers, whose jobs are way more important.
