@sarobertsonca A $90+ billion taxpayer funded project? Of course there is going to be conflicts. They are the closest to the money printer. Enriching themselves first, Canadians last.
English

@JayGenXer It’s almost as if the government needs those tax dollars for François-Philippe Champagne’s wife’s Alto train project.
Hmmm…
English

@evil_Jdubs @JayGenXer During Covid, Alberta removed provincial gas taxes for a period of time - to offer relief to citizens. Then later added it back. The pump prices were noticeably lower. Turns out, it worked.
English

@JayGenXer While we’re at it, we should also tell the government to heavily subsidize gas at a loss to taxpayers, like they do in Iran and Libya and finance it with high interest debt! It’s completely sustainable!
English

Yet he voted in favour of spending estimates in the House that allocated $597 million for this fiscal year to Alto where his partner is an executive. So much for recusal.

@mapleblooded Champagne literally allocated funds for this in his own budget lol.

The Finance Minister in Canada is traditionally equivalent to the Vice President in the US.
Just WTF is going on with this government?
Michael Barrett@MikeBarrettON
The Finance Minister claims he recused himself. But, the Ethics Commissioner seems to have no record of it. We need to get to the bottom of this.
English

@CheriDiNovo The problem is the Liberals have managed Canada so poorly over the past decade, this gas price surge is the straw that broke the camel’s back.
English

@DavidColetto If by “stable” you mean quality of life shrinking at a steady pace at the hands of the Liberal government.
English

If the Liberals easily win all three by-elections, it’s not just about seats or a majority government.
I think, tt’s evidence of something bigger:
A “precarity mindset” shaping how Canadians vote.
When the world feels unstable, stability wins.

@cbcwatcher The Liberal government will spend $10 billion at the drop of a hat - on some ridiculous mandate or program that will yield zero results. But when it comes to responding to a real and immediate need, they just can't muster it.
Is it because there's nothing in it for them?
English

Four left leaning columnists/journalists... Rosie says "I think Pierre Poilievre had a good point, Nick, because this is really an affordability issue, and he's trying to tap into it."
"...And then the government saying, maybe we'll get around to it?"
Nick Taylor-Vaisey of Politico "And so most economists will say that a rebate is the most efficient thing to do because it means that those who don't need to pay won't, and those who need relief will eventually get it. But speed's the problem here"
Emilie Nicolas of le Devoir "I wonder if there were more solutions for food insecurity or for poverty in this country if it was the price of eggs or the price of bread or the price of milk that had big red numbers flashing in the side of the world as well." (Dont tell her about supply management making eggs more expensive)
Gary Mason of the Globe and Mail "So if you drop those taxes for the rest of the year, you're talking about like a $3.5 billion hole in your budget."
Gary in all his Globe analysis has never raised a concern about the rising Carney deficit before. Must only matter when trying to criticize Poilievre
English

@bruce_barrett Of course.
And Canadians didn't vote for it. That's the problem. Democracy in Canada is fading.
English

@time_in_malta @JigglyPants44 The problem is logic.
Here’s another angle: “Due to the massive deficits accrued by the Liberal government since 2015, servicing the debt now costs $55 billion per year. So no, you cannot have a $90 billion choo-choo-train.”
English

@JigglyPants44 My god…
We have an existing railway. You can get a ticket and go on it right now.
reservia.viarail.ca/en/booking/cre…
We do NOT have a west to east pipeline.
These aren’t the same things. Let alone economic impacts, benefits to the nation & all the provinces with a west-east pipeline.
English

@MarcNixon24 Democracy is dead in Canada. The vote no longer matters. The people's voices are no longer heard. It is a sad day that MPs are bought and sold.
English

@furmsies Canadians are “the frog in boiling water”. It’s getting so bad that government handouts, tax rebates, and programs are on the rise. Most are downtrodden so badly that socialism looks good.
Alberta has a perceived alternative to socialism, so it’s being discussed and explored.
