Important overview of Steve Coll’s new book, “The Achilles Trap.” The 🧵 includes some reflection on the challenges of writing post-Cold War era history. Be sure to catch @DanielChardell’s full review in the newest issue of @SHAFRhistorians Passport!

But Coll’s brilliant use of interviews shouldn’t make us complacent about solving the crisis of declassification. Ultimately, there’s no substitute for that critical ingredient, the archival record. (30/30)

To reconstruct the American side of the story, Coll relies on memoirs, unclassified govt investigations, and 100+ interviews with historical actors. It’s a herculean feat. (29/30)
