Wang's own family didn't fully believe the friendship was real until 2015, when Barkley's mother passed and Wang flew to Alabama for the funeral, confusing Barkley's other friends. When Wang himself passed awat from cancer in June 2018, the day after the NBA Finals, Barkley showed up in Iowa City and delivered the eulogy himself, telling Wang's daughter it was one of the honors of his life.
