The biggest swings in MMA performances usually come from intangibles. Not the matchup. Not the stats. Something happening outside the cage. Injuries in camp, brutal weight cuts, long layoffs, mental distractions, or major life events. Those factors never show up on tape or in the numbers, but they can change how a fighter performs dramatically. At the end of 2025 I made a bet on Petr Yan at around +300/+400 against Merab Dvalishvilli, and two big reasons for that were because: Yan was badly injured in the first fight (more than you could see IN the fight) Merab was overtrained and had way too many fights and weight cuts in 2025 Both of these factors influenced the entire fight, but you would not know them if you simply just watched tape or looked at stats. A guy can look elite one fight and completely flat the next, simply because an intangible shifted his preparation, conditioning, or mindset going into the bout. Be weary of this when betting MMA, or any other sport honestly, it applies to them all.
