A lot of people seemed confused about the Malik Willis signing. Here’s what I believe the rationale is: Willis is being treated like a low end / high upside starter in this market. He’s not coming here to compete or back anyone up, he’s coming to start. He was always going to start somewhere this year and Miami wants him to start here. He got that big of a contract because they plan on starting him, but in the landscape of QB contracts, $23M/year is extremely cheap. Sully & Hafley have seen him in GB and believe he can be the guy. So, they want to take a chance on him on a low end QB starter deal. It’s only guaranteed through 2 years, so if 2 years go by and he doesn’t work out we’ll move on. If it does work out, you’ve got your young franchise QB at a great price and then you’ll extend him in 2028. We’re already in cap hell the next 2 years so what’s one more contract to see if you can steal a franchise QB. He’s young and shown flashes, but still unproven. We’re giving him a chance to be the full time starter and let’s see if he cashes in on that.
