According to the Wall Street Journal, citing multiple U.S. officials, Iran has targeted the joint U.S.-UK base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean with two intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBM). According to the report, one missile failed in flight whilst the other was engaged by a U.S. destroyer utilizing an SM-3 interceptor, but a successful interception was not confirmed. None of the missiles hit the base. This is notable as Iranian long-range precision fires have not previously been publicly assessed as having the range to hit such a target as Diego Garcia, as the base is some 4,000 kilometers from Iran proper.

Former Gauteng Health CFO Lerato Madyo was Reportedly Paid An Undisclosed Settlement After Allegedly Looting Over R2 Billion With Other Syndicates at Tembisa Hospital, Escaped Accountability and Changed Her Identity Former Gauteng Health CFO Lerato Madyo was allegedly paid a settlement to leave the department despite being implicated in the looting of over R2 billion at Tembisa Hospital. The DA revealed Madyo, who reportedly changed her identity to Daniella Molapo and moved to Limpopo, left the department without being held accountable for her role in the scandal. Madyo resigned in August 2024 following suspension over allegations tied to fraudulent payments flagged by slain whistle-blower Babita Deokaran. Deokaran had identified over R850 million in suspicious Tembisa Hospital payments before her assassination in 2021. While Madyo temporarily froze some payments, she allegedly released them after Deokaran’s murder. Crucial evidence, including her cellphone with relevant WhatsApp messages, went missing before authorities could analyse it. The DA, through Shadow MEC Jack Bloom, revealed that Madyo did not resign voluntarily but received a lucrative settlement package authorised by the department’s accounting officer. The Premier’s Office was notified but did not participate in the arrangement. Bloom described the payoff as “outrageous,” arguing the department covered up the settlement and that disciplinary proceedings were dragged out for two years. GDoH spokesperson Kealeboga Mohajane stated the settlement was in line with labour frameworks and not a “golden handshake.” Pension benefits are determined by the Government Employees Pension Fund. Mohajane noted that evidentiary constraints affected disciplinary proceedings, prompting a termination agreement to end Madyo’s employment, despite ongoing investigations into misconduct and corruption-related matters. Madyo faced 13 misconduct charges, including failing to prevent fruitless and wasteful expenditure and approving dubious medical supply contracts. The DA claims she received R3 million during suspension, leaving with her pension and an undisclosed settlement amount. The SIU report confirmed over R2 billion was siphoned through three coordinated syndicates, implicating at least 15 current and former officials in corruption, money laundering, and bid-rigging. Bloom criticised the lack of accountability, noting that similar corruption occurs in other hospitals and that no arrests have been made for the officials named in the SIU report. The DA also filed criminal charges against Madyo in October 2025, citing failure to report corruption, PFMA breaches, and conspiracy to commit fraud. They continue to pursue the case to ensure justice and transparency in the Tembisa Hospital scandal.
