Alzheimer’s is one of medicine's hardest unsolved problems, and one of the most devastating. At the OpenAI Foundation, we believe AI is well suited to its complexity. We're directing over $100M to scientists mapping the disease, designing drugs, & more. I wrote about it here: openaifoundation.org/news/ai-for-al…

How to design a cancer vaccine (and vastly improve them): Alex Rubinsteyn & Ben Vincent this is an interview with @iskander and @BenjaminGVincen, two UNC professors. it is three hours of incredibly detailed takes on cancer vaccines, personalized immunotherapy, and how both may be improved in the fullness of time. Alex and Ben are both wellsprings of knowledge and this was a very, very fun episode to film; i expect it could've gone on for an hour longer. enjoy! (other links in reply) youtu.be/EmbciAO9d-M

It was fun to be one of the judges for this essay competition, mostly as an excuse to read essays about science, and secondly to reflect on how AI is affecting scientific writing. The essays that read like they were 100% LLM-generated usually didn't contain the best ideas, according to my human judgement. But, some of the best essays were LLM-assisted at the level of sentences (according to Pangram's judgement). Perhaps most surprising for me was that some *good* essays contained LLM sentences AND typos!
Michael Nielsen@michael_nielsen

The AI usage was really interesting. I got that "AI feeling" a bunch of times in reading entries (which tended to check out in Pangram), but the underlying ideas were often good and well expressed, so we decided to ignore it in scoring

The OpenAI Foundation is joining Intercept as a founding partner through our AI resilience program. As AI accelerates advances in biology and medicine, we also need to prepare for the risks of misuse, including the potential for engineered outbreaks. Intercept Health Fund is working to end respiratory pandemics through a pathogen-agnostic approach, investing in broad-spectrum preventatives and non-pharmaceutical interventions that can protect against a wide range of threats and strengthen a new layer of resilience for humanity. blog.interceptfund.com/p/ending-respi…

First we have “Universal Vaccines” led by Bali Pulendran at Stanford. Building on strong mouse data published in Science back in Feb, we’re funding Phase I/II clinical trials to see if his team’s approach can protect humans from flu. Will be the first validation in humans if so!

The owl has landed 🦉

Life update: after an incredible year at Noetik, I’ve joined the OpenAI Foundation (@FoundationOAI) to help create its "Public Data for Health" program. The OpenAI Foundation is a well-capitalized philanthropy, and a meaningful share of its funds will be committed to building and opening up the datasets necessary to massively accelerate biomedical research. Some of our grants will go toward efforts to relieve known data bottlenecks, but others will be more speculative, made on the premise that artificial intelligence is currently reshaping how scientific discovery happens, and that this reshaping will surface fundamentally new data bottlenecks of its own. We have a long to-do list ahead of us, and I’m ecstatic to be joining @JacobTref on this effort! On writing: I’ve spent the last few years covering the intersection of AI with many, many subfields of the life sciences at owlposting.com, and it will continue + remain independent. Many exciting essays and podcasts are planned! Lastly, I remain extremely optimistic on Noetik and am very thankful for my time there. Consider following @Ronalfa and @recursus to stay updated on their efforts!

The OpenAI Foundation is proud to be founding partner of @raiseus_ai, a new national nonprofit bringing together governors, companies, educators, and philanthropies to help American workers train, transition, and thrive in an AI economy. Learn more at raiseus.ai
RAISE US@raiseus_ai

Today, we're launching RAISE US. America has a technology strategy for AI. It doesn't have a people strategy yet. We're here to build one. RAISE US is co-chaired by @GinaRaimondo and Eric Holcomb. We're working with governors, employers, and educators to help workers train, transition, and thrive. This works because the people building AI and the people most affected by it are at the same table. Read more: raiseus.ai #RAISEUS

Big and happy news. Congratulations to @hebebbington and the rest of Frontier. Interesting to read about the progress over the last 4 years from technologists working on different carbon removal paths. Long way to go, but the fog is clearing:

Fantastic news from NSF: Adam Russell has been appointed to lead the new $1.5 billion X-Labs initiative to fund ambitious & innovative research institutions. Adam previously worked at DARPA, IARPA, and helped launch ARPA-H. Hard to think of a better person to lead X-Labs.

Here's where we are starting, on AI resilience: * Bio-resilience * Cyber-resilience * AI model safety * AI's impact on young people We are grateful for what we've learned so far from practitioners in each of these fields. Building resilience will take a broad community of people and organisations, and we look forward to supporting many. Read more:
