Following with concern the case of @libe 🇨🇵 journalist Raphaël Boukandoura, detained on Monday in Istanbul while covering a protest & now facing deportation despite being based in 🇹🇷 since 2015! Independent journalism is really a hazardous job in #Türkiye for locals & foreigners.

Many people on both sides of the Turkey-PKK conflict remain unconvinced by the peace process. They often have contradictory ideas of what has happened and the way forward—regardless of the outcome of ongoing clashes in Syria. @Daniel_B_Thorpe reports: turkeyrecap.com/p/the-trust-de…

📌French journalist detained in Istanbul, faces possible deportation French journalist Raphaël Boukandoura was detained on January 19 in Istanbul’s Sancaktepe district while covering a protest organized by the pro-Kurdish DEM Party against the offensive in northern Syria. His statement was taken by the Security Branch, where Boukandoura said he was present strictly in his capacity as a journalist and was reporting on the demonstration for Libération. During questioning, police asked Boukandoura about slogans allegedly chanted during the protest. He stated that he did not chant any slogans and was at the scene solely to report. On Tuesday, Boukandoura was transferred to Sarıgazi Police Station and is expected to be referred to the Provincial Directorate of Migration. He may face deportation. MLSA Legal Unit is following his case.

#Turkey: IPI calls for immediate release of French journalist Raphaël Boukandoura, a permanently accredited journalist, who has been detained while covering a protest. Treating journalism as a crime and threatening deportation is unacceptable. ➡️ buff.ly/2rr0z4t

An entire news crew working for Al Jazeera was killed by Israel on August 10. IAmong them was Anas Al-Sharif, a prominent journalist who had been the recent target of a smear campaign by Israel's military. “Israel’s pattern of labeling journalists as militants without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom,” said CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah. “Journalists are civilians and must never be targeted. Those responsible for these killings must be held accountable.” #Gaza #NotATarget Full statement: cpj.org/2025/08/israel…
